this reissue came out in 2001, which means it is 25 years old

the original god ginrai gift set was 13 years old when the reissue came out

next year this reissue will be twice as old as the original figure was when the reissue was first released

your bones are now dust
We're now further away from 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime than that figure was from the 1984 original.

The constant forward march of time comes for us all. 🤷

i've had super ginrai in his box since 2024 in a box in my den...i took him out last night for the first time to mess with him again

i've no idea if it's because of the 'he hasn't been transformed since 2024' or the 'this mold is from 2016 (2015 if you count the original CW ultra magnus version)' part but he is so goddamn creaky. like in a level beyond the normal jankiness i know and expect from this mold and my specific copy of it lol. like a lot of the joints just feel off in a way compared to what we get nowadays y'know just in terms of how they feel to move them for some reason idk why. maybe i've been spoiled by the quality of all the current stuff.

My Ultra Magnus is the same way. There was definitely a short time there where ultra thin plastic was being tried as a costsaving measure. The toys from that era were trying to keep the complexity of the movie lines while using less material. You can definitely feel the difference, and as plastic gets more brittle and joints seize up over time, there will definitely come a day where they can't be transformed without breaking something.

I think it's partly a difference in style and engineering (I can point to a few things I wouldn't expect to see on a 2022+ design, like the heavy reliance on thin panels) and partly a difference in just plastic age. I recently handled this mold as well and it really is creaky, and the hip ratchets are kiiind of scary to move. It's worrisome as it feels like brittleness might accompany that. And, like, I have enough of that in my own body to worry about, can I at least have some toys that aren't also likely to break something if they try to move.

There's so much that can be done better with all the God Ginrai components that I'd love to see the current team take a crack at, provided it's widely available and not stupid expensive.

My nephew loves that Optimus, but the thin plastic knees supporting those massive di-cast lower legs cracked, so I went in and worked them back into a functional transformabale friction joint. No ratchet, but it let the old toy continue to entertain a kid for several more years...

Nope. Two of them have die cast. (At least, I think Fire Guts Ginrai kept regular Ginrai's die cast? TF Wiki doesn't specify.)

The CW Ultra Magnus mold and all its retools are incredibly creaky. That's just how that mold was made.

Wow, this threat brings back memories...my KayBee always had Machine Wars, a G2 Optimus, and a G2 Megatron tucked away on a top shelf. I wonder if somewhere in an abandoned wharehouse they're still there, yelling "Megatron attack!" "I am Optimus Prime!" "Megatron attack!" "I am Optimus Prime!" over and over at each other in the dark as Machine Wars Optimus wonders what life is like outside the box, and if he really does have a mouth or not, he's never seen himself...

And my bones are NOT dust! Dust doesn't crack and grind like this...

I haunted my Kay-Bee toys to pick up the entire MW lineup, so it's fun to see MW Prime again.

That abandoned warehouse you're talking about, though - Megatron and Op get interrupted every so often by that Little People farm set with the haunted gate. My wife and I had one of those and it'd go off even when my daughter wasn't home.

Y'all still haven't figured out the one I had in mind. (And yes, I actually do have one in mind, I'm not just being a prick.) If nobody gets it by tomorrow, I'll just say it.
