Star Trek General Discussion

I was recently reminded that the local MeTV's cartoon fork picked up the OG Animated Series. I've seen few episodes by now, and it's charmingly weird in its own 70s animation way. On the one hand, the limitations of 30 minute episodes to cram Trek stories into and the janky slash very-budget-conscious animation do take a toll. So, so much stock footage; only having to animate half the frame because the other half is an unreasonable closeup of someone's face; the Hanna-Barbara slide...

On the other, this was the only new Star Trek on TV between TOS and TMP, which given the context of time is pretty significant. And having the actual actors voice their animated characters wasn't exactly common at the time either (props to Nichols and Doohan for basically voicing 90% of the non-main characters too).

And on Arex's third hand, the animated format let them play with a lot of stuff that wouldn't have been possible in live action, whether for practical or 'merely' budgetary concerns. We get weirder aliens like Triaxaians, Caitians/Kzinti, all the gribblies that would have had to been stiff rubber suits or puppets in live action. Ships that could move in more than straight lines. Other ship designs, and weird ones like the Kzinti or Kulkulcan's that would have been crazy as models.

It's weird, it's charming, I know it absolutely has some trashfire-tier episodes amid the good ones...so, basially proper Star Trek anyway. :)

I found the Animated Series on DVD at Big Lots years ago. I had vague memories of watching it occasionally on Nickelodeon as a kid, but it was my first "grown up" watching. Like you said, some episodes are a bit silly, but it's got some great ones that are every bit as good as the live action version as well.

They really loved reusing the purple pterodactyl footage. That thing must have been in every other episode.

I got them all on Morpheus (is there a statute of limitations?) long, long ago, but now it has been more than 20 years since I watched them. My recollection is that they were better written than they had any business being.

I watched the Star Trek animated series on The Sci-Fi Channel (along with the Planet of the Apes cartoon!) when i was in my teens and loved it! I bought the DVD set when first came out, and recently started rewatching it with Haywire3, who was getting into it!

I think my favorite bit was the episode when Spock goes back in time to his childhood. The Vulcan critter with the Godzilla roar still makes me laugh!

You may also like the novella "The Chimes at Midnight", which posits how the TOS films (or at least II through VI) would have gone in the alternate timeline where Thelin was Kirk's science officer. Some things go very differently, some... are fitting (such as McCoy becoming the Voice of Reason to rein in an impulsive Andorian).

A warning, Star Trek without Spock is definitely Not The Same in many respects. But this story shows us why.

Got an author on that?

Someone by the name of Geoff Trowbridge.

And I did rediscover a review of the story, one that looks at the changes (and lacks of changes) cause for want of a Vulcan-human fusion as a study on narrative and the history of the Star Trek franchise.

OMNahla, yes!

Saw ep6 and it was AMAZING!!!!! There's some bits I would have wanted not to happen but it was still an GREAT ep! They got past the character focus eps and got into the AWESOME!

Have to ask but was the start the sexiest that Star Trek has ever been? I know Enterprise didn't do that but I'm trying to recall if modern Trek Discovery or Picard had that. Even Strange New Worlds only had s1 Pike in the afterglow.

I start semi turned me off a bit but, gosh, what a very cool ep it was going onwards! Like, wow!

Oh have to ask, is this guy a Ferengi? Or a Klingon Ferengi? He appeared at the start during instructions. With Lura being a mix of Klingon and Jem Hadar, I can't tell with the ridges and the lobes. Would love it if there was another Nog like Ferengi in Starfleet with a dream.

It is hard to tell with these producers. They wouldn't want to make a Ferengi look like they used to look. That would bore them. The ear makes me think of Remans, but I went and refreshed my image of Remans and it still looks more like a Ferengi than a Reman. And it isn't going to be a character, so we're not going to know. Hybrids every which way.

Yeah, that's just what Ferengi look like in the Secret Hideout era. We've seen a lot of them in Starfleet since Discovery arrived in the 32nd century.

I haven't seen the latest episode yet. I have seen spoilers that the Vulcan boy dies. I have been saying Vulcan boy and Romulan girl, but I was just thinking about it and do Ni'Varans still identify as Vulcans and Romulans?

Aw dang, you got spoiled on it. It was such a horrible thing to happen. Watch the ep anyway! It was amazing!

Secret Hideout is modern Trek, produced by Alex Kurtzman's production company (Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy).

As opposed to classic Trek (TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise), overseen by Rick Berman as Supervising/Executive Producer. TOS (and TAS) is usually lumped in with the Berman era, since Roddenberry handed the reigns to him directly.

I... did not know that. I must have been skipping the intro and credits.

Secret Hideout is also the Kelvin universe?

I don't mind spoilers. I did watch it over the weekend.

I don't have a lot to say, I guess. The episode was well crafted in general and I enjoyed it. It felt a little more like a superhero movie or something that Star Trek. I enjoyed the scenes with Ake and Brakka, particularly noticing how Ake just sat there looking at him while he talked and talked. Both are playing their characters really well.

It felt just a little pat the way every character got their moment. That's what gives me the superhero vibe, though most weren't meta powers. Main boy brought the programmable matter, B'avi (I thought they were saying Bobby, so I looked it up) knew how to start the drive, Sam could start the computer, Genesis could find the alien ship, Khionian boy could let Genesis have sole credit for what she solely did, Betazoid boy could deliver awkward humor, and Betazoid girl just happened to be an expert at blowing out auditory nerves. But I know I am being a little cynical here. It is hard to give everyone their moment without making it feel like you were doing it on purpose and maybe it doesn't matter.

I felt like they used an illegal building technique. I don't think Starfleet would abandon their life-affirming policy of sharing dilithium with a whole system in order to save 5-6 lives, but more importantly the writers are not supposed to make a scenario where Starfleet would have to make a choice like that that is going to look bad to some people either way it falls.

Haven't watched it myself, but honestly to me this sounds more like a Heist movie than a Superhero movie, if I were to make a comparison.

Oh, yes, that's right. I have only seen one of those and an episode of DS9, but yes.

Edit - Well, no. In a heist movie, everyone was recruited to fill a part in the plan. It is EXPLICITLY contrived. What is going on here is everyone jumping in with their special talent when it is supposed to seem like it just worked out that way.
