Now eventually you are going to have a Comic Book thread on this Comic Book forum, right?

A Very Merry Crossover-mas to you all!

Just a reminder, Deadpool/Batman comes out today. And you'll need to go to a comic shop to get it, because the digital version doesn't come out until sometime later.

I've already read it, and it's pretty good. It didn't blow me away, but there's a lot of really solid art on display. And Krypto versus Jeff is just pure joy. Not all the stories are winners, but it's a anthology, so there's going to be ups and downs. I think it's worth the extra money. It's a nice chonky book. It's a lot of fun to see these two groups of character get to cross over again.

I've seen this on two "pirate" comic sites.

It's kind of up in the air, right now. The company that owns Diamond may sell off the "Free Comic Book Day" branding to...someone? Maybe? And various comic companies have talked about just doing the event without the branding, in some form. Kind of like what DC has been doing the last few years. Choosing not to work directly through Diamond, or whoever ends up with the rights to the name.

The truth is, we don't know right now.

It might still happen in some form. Or it might not. And it's possible that in order to get the Free Comic Book Day books, retailers will have to order through multiple different distributors, if they want to get them all. It probably won't be a one-stop shop like with Diamond, anymore. And it was already kind of expensive to take part in for comic shops. So, I can imagine some comic shops not participating next year, or doing something different for that day. If it even happens.

It's a little early to say that FCBD is dead. But...well, it's on life support, at least.

I could see them maybe moving away from "Free" Comic Book Day, and slowly changing it into "Discount" Comic Book Day. With $1 comics or something. But, that's pure speculation. Time will tell.

Side thing but since this is the comic reading thread, anybody read the Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza Thunderbolts run?

I want to know if anyone else thinks Fabian's run is better. Honestly, sometimes Kurt has no edge, since he's being too nice in his stories. So I liked Fabian's take better.

Fixer was amazing, the Redeemers vs Graviton was horrific, Moonstone was more manipulative.

Will admit that Bagley's art seems... more nice, more cartoony when compared to Zircher's more defined art. Could be influencing me too.

I'll admit, it's been on my list. But, I've just never gotten around to it. Just one of those things I keep passing over for no good reason. I really should check out more Thunderbolts.

I don't usually do a lot with comics, but I have a few faves. Most recently, I finally got an order in at my local shop - picked up Tron: Download, ahead of (sigh) Ares. It's just a compilation TPB of the original movie adaptation issues along with Betrayal, but the originals are quite out of print.

Here's some more Free Comic Book Day news. Universal Distribution have bought the rights to FCBD.

What does this mean? Um...*shrugs*...there's a lot of marketing lingo without a lot of firm details. They do mention doing more digitally. Which is...fine, I guess. FCBD kind of lives or dies depending on if all the other publishers get on board with it, though. So, we'll see what actually happens. But, this is...probably good news? At least a step in the right direction, maybe? Hopefully, all the other comic publishers are willing to work with them to still make FCBD happen next year.

There's a update to the FCBD situation.

A bunch of smaller comic companies are doing their OWN Free Comic Book Day! Without the official branding. Called "First Saturday In May"!

The biggest book here is probably the Dungeon Crawler Carl comic, which is a rising star in the novel world. But, they also have Flash Gordan and Conan comics. And Inanna looks interesting.

These all seem to be very much NOT for kids. So, keep that in mind. (Especially Gun Honey, don't go giving kids Gun Honey.) But, it's interesting to see. Publishers moving away from "FCBD" technically, but still doing the event their own way. I'm curious how other companies are going to handle things this year. I think we're still waiting to see if DC or Marvel actually do anything for next year or not.

Thanks for the update. Have you heard anything about them continuing the partnership with libraries? I haven't really found anything.

I haven't heard anything. I'm not sure they've thought that far ahead, given how new it is. I don't think it's even a official group/business, and I can't find a website or e-mail for them, at least as far as "First Saturday in May" is concerned.

I'll try to update the thread if I see anything, at least if they get a site up. That way, you could at least e-mail them and ask.

Okay, another update on the Free Comic Book Day situation.

Remember that "First Saturday In May" competing event I mentioned before? Well, it sounds like that's getting absorbed into Free Comic Book Day proper. Which sounds like it is still happening for next year, though they'll be announcing the books pretty late, compared to previous years.

...But, Lunar/Universal and Penguin Random House can't come to a agreement. So, about half of the comic industry won't be part of "Free Comic Book Day" proper. Instead they're starting their own event on the same day called "Comic Free-For-All". Things may change (again), but for right now it sounds like: Marvel, Dark Horse, Boom, IDW, and Dstlry will be part of "Comic Free-For-All". Supposedly, this means DC and everyone else might be part of "Free Comic Book Day", but nothing's been officially announced outside of the Mad Cave and Vault comics from before.

So, if you want to get all the free comics, you're going to have to work with two different event teams. Most of the books haven't been announced yet. And given how late this is all coming together, I imagine the selection won't be as wide as it has been in past years. No word yet on how they're handling the libraries. But, we'll see how this all shakes out. Things could change again.

So I haven't been super following DC's Absolute stuff so I missed this entirely until just the other night, but Absolute Ra's al Ghul is Canadian.

"Oh hey there, buddy. Doncha know that when a hoser stands in the way of true justice, you walk up behind 'em and stab 'em in the back, eh? Go Leafs go!"

Marvel just announced their comics for Free Comic Book Day....I mean..."Comics Giveaway Day"! (Pick a name and stick with it, already!)

Amazing Spider-Man #1000(Prelude)/Queen in Black, Armageddon/X-Men, Alien/Predator/Planet of the Apes, and Spidey and His Amazing Friend Meet Jeff the Land-Shark!

EDIT: And now more!

We got Jem/My Little Pony, Power Rangers, Avatar the Last Airbender, Masters of the Universe/Dungeons and Dragons, Sonic the Hedgehog, and MORE!

So anyone who was a fan of the old late CrossGen comics company (like my wife who LOVED them) might want to buy the newest issue of Marvel's Battleworld mini.

Yeah, Giselle from Mystic showed up in a previous issue of that miniseries, too. Not sure if this is something they're planting seeds for, or if it's just a "we own 'em, we might as well use 'em" sort of thing. I wouldn't mind we could get the last few issues of Negation War made, just to officially wrap up that universe.

...Or...well, Jonathan Hickman's leaving the New Ultimate Universe soon. And he DOES enjoy his little corners where he can build things undisturbed. Maybe Jonathan Hickman's next project could be CrossGen? He's shown a interest in doing genres outside of superhero comics. And CrossGen has a little bit of everything. Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Cosmic overarching stories. I think he'd be a pretty good match for CrossGen's structure. CrossGen getting the Ultimate/Absolute treatment could be a lot of fun.

...I don't know, I can dream. I know they tried and basically failed to bring back CrossGen in the 2010s. But, with Hickman at the helm, I think it'd have a better shot. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for it, growing up when they were really pushing it in bookstores.
