Spaceballs II: The Schwartz Awakens

It better not be subtitled 'The Schwartz Awakens'. They announced the perfect subtitle in the original movie!!! I'm amazed that they convinced Rick Moranis to reprise his role as Dark Helmet. They couldn't even get him to play Louis Tully in the recent Ghostbusters films. Guess we just needed to get Mel Brooks to convince him.

I'm really worried that Brooks won't survive to see the movie's premier, though. The man will be over 100 by the time it hits theatres. Thankfully, he seems to be sharp as ever. At least judging by that clip.

Rick Moranis was signed on for a legacy sequel to "Honey I Shrunk the Kids", but it fell apart in development.

"There's only ever been one...SPACEBALLS!"

I feel like they're forgetting the G4TV animated series.

Don't you dare think we're going to forget about this. You might WISH we'd forget about it, but we won't! The new sequel better address the DEEP LORE introduced in the animated series, or the fans will riot!

I do look forward to finally seeing the Intergalactic Ski Race, though.

Come on, get the title right. This film has one job.
Given how things change in development, I'll forgive them if they at least manage to call it out and make a good gag out of it.

Who all is even still alive to reprise their roles? I know for certain John Candy and Joan Rivers are dead. Those were two really big parts. Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis may have to carry the movie themselves.

I just learned yesterday that Bill Pullman's real-life son is an actor. They could get him to play Lonestar's son Zylo Fohn.

I'm a little worried about that long list at the beginning, though. I hope they're not going to try to make an Epic Movie out of this that crams in parodies of 20 different franchises.

Daphne Zuniga is still around, and acting (And also confirmed to be returning). George Wyner is still kicking, and might be game to play “General Sanderz”, while Michael Winslow and Tim Russ could be tapped for cameos.

My wife laughed out loud at the tone in my voice when I sighed "Well, I hope they make it good."

I love Spaceballs. I remember being a kid and reading about it with interest in an issue of Starlog at the public library before it came out. It was probably my first Mel Brooks film.

I'm pretty sure I only glanced across the Cartoon but I remember it seeming dire. None of his post Spaceballs films were quite as good IMO (many of the pre-Spaceballs ones definitely were though and I went back and watched them all) . And honestly, I love Mel, but how long has it been since he made a film?

ZacWilliam, well...I really do hope they make it good.

I hope it's good, but at this point for me, it's been so long that it's more like a bonus than, like, if it was a current series of movies going on, y'know?

Oh yeah, it's bad. But, I still want them to acknowledge it. If only for a gag.

"Oh...you found an old DVD of that. Let me see that for a second."

It makes for a good "removed from canon" joke. Like the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Well, he did have a hand in "History of the World Part 2" back in 2023. He was only a producer on that, so it's hard to say how involved he actually was. He wrote "Paws of Fury" which is basically a animated remake of Blazing Saddles with marital arts in 2022. That was a pretty big flop. He's also the voice of Dracula's father in the Hotel Transylvania movies, but that's only a fairly brief voice acting role.

So, yeah, I think Mel will probably only have a limited role with Spaceballs 2, sad to say.

Post-Spaceballs, I did really like "Robin Hood Men in Tights". I remember not really caring for "Dracula Dead and Loving It", though. I don't remember why. Probably should give that a rewatch at some point. I guess I've never seen a few of his earlier films, like "The Twelve Chairs". Probably should fix that, too.

But, yeah. I'll echo the sentiment of "I hope it's good." I honestly don't know where you take the story. But, there's MORE than enough Star Wars that you could parody lots of it. Including the poor, discarded Expanded Universe.

Men in Tights was likely the last good movie he directed, though I don't personally think it was as good as Spaceballs and Spaceballs isn't as good as Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein. Not that it matters, he's not going to direct Spaceballs 2 and I'm not sure how much influence he'll have in the writers room. If they can find the right director who truly understands what makes Brooks' best comedies work we should be in for a good time. Not sure who'd I'd pick for that duty.

There's no way SpaceBalls 2 will be anything but a disaster, and they will REVEL in it, and openly compare their accomplishment to Disney's handling of the Star Wars franchise.

"Somehow, Dark Helmet returned..."
Dark Helmet: "They offered me double residuals."
"Oh, ok...one problem solved better than our inspiration material. So, moving on..."

The original was one of two movies everyone in my college friend group knew by heart (the other being Monty Python and the Holy Grail), so my interest is certainly piqued, but with how disappointing History of the World part 2 was, I'm not holding out any great hope that it'll be another masterpiece.

Am I the only one who did like that one? It's more respectful of the source material than most "serious" Dracula adaptations.

It's been a while since I've seen Dead and Loving It. In fact, I think I've only seen it once and that was before I actually read the novel.

I'm going to have to watch that again some time...and probably read the novel again at some point.
