Not a whole league, and they have a *lot* of existing names they can recycle.

Oh, I realise that. Just was commenting that for overseas (as in non-American) Transformers fans, the appeal is going to be marginal. Usually the collaborative figures are related to franchises with a higher level of international recognition. However, given the NFL figures seem to share mouldings, I suspect they will be profitable enough.
This one actually feels more appropriate since Fox has used football-player robots in some of their graphics.
I'm pretty sure they only have to have the rights from the NFL. I don't think individual teams get a say.
Correct. NFL licences work on a collective bargaining model. Meaning if you buy a hat for your local team the profits are split 32 ways.
I'm sure Hasbro would own those if only because I doubt the NFL would want or even know what to do with them. As for Agent X's question of "So will Hasbro pay to copyright Thirty-Two (32) different names, that will have limited use outside of this line?"...
I don't see why not? Hasbro pays to copyright new names all the time. And clearly the cost of doing that thirty-two times for this collab was factored in and deemed a worthwhile investment, or it wouldn't have happened.
I guess I don't see it as a massive roadblock.
You don't copyright names, you trademark them, and I don't see any trademarks for any of these bots in the USPTO.
