The Random Image Thread

It's just a bit disingenuous for it to suddenly be an issue here. Historically, the Random Image Thread has been just that - random. While I agree that art should typically be credited wherever it originates, I've never seen this particular thread as that kind of place. Are we going to start having credits for memes too? Seems only "fair". People aren't posting things here for any reason beyond, "Look at this random pic I found". Self-Destruct's noodling around with AI to draw their character is not taking money away from hard-working artists somewhere - they just wouldn't have that picture.

Now, the Iacon Art Institute thread? Sure.

Your "example" is also a bit disingenious, as crediting a small artist who is trying to survive off commissions(and people might actually want to throw money at) is far different than posting the entire movie credits for a 5 second clip where those people will not benefit in any way from said providing of credits as I doubt we can go commission, say, Leon Aspey to build something for us, and they do not need commissions to survive. Also 2D/3D art is different to Live Action, in that someone might post photographs of things too. (In before Dake posts a clip from Star Wars Christmas Special and proceeds to list the entire credits of that show.)

I also think it's fair that if you don't know the source(at least for this thread) of some random image on imgur ro reddit(to note a couple of the problem children) then you shouldn't also need to go on a 30 minute manhunt across the internet to find the original artist of an image.. at least for this thread. So I'd say credit the artist for the art where applicable and possible, as a courtesy. Or if you want to be lazy, just link your source. Cause everyone likes extra sauce.

And image tax:

Ok so you listed your source, which is a random social media post of someone that cross posted it from a random twitter post. We are still none the wiser as to who created the image. A Google image search brings us to Know Your Meme page that links to a Reddit thread from seven years ago that also links to an Imgur post. In ALL of that, still know idea who the creator was.

Ultimately, if you know where something came from and want to include it - fine. But this demand to announce AI/nonAI on random, forgettable posts in a thread dedicated to random pictures is just tedious. The key is, no one here is claiming this stuff as their own creation. Meanwhile, if you see something you like, you can always ask the poster here where they found it and do the rest of the legwork yourself.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

Okay, so hows about making citing of sources voluntary? Let the folks whom want to do it, and let everyone else just post as they please.

For people who want to post ai art in the art forum I created the tag to do that. In the case of posting random images here I feel like if its "obviously ai" then it shouldn't need much more explanation than that. But if it's something that's ai trying to be passed off falsely as "real art" then don't lie about it, pretty much.

After reading Kalidor's post, one thing that strikes me(and may be part of the whole issue here) is that the Iacon Art forum is a part of the -Transformers- section, which suggests it should used primarily for TF and TF-adjacent content. There's obviously no "general" art forum, and I don't recall any general art threads outside Mayhem, so this Random Image thread is the closest thing to that. Perhaps it's time that someone make one, more intended for sharing art(and with AI art tagged per Kalidor's comment above) and this thread is more for memes or other actual random stuff that we're not intending to present as art, per se? (Though that can be it's own kettle of fish I suppose...)

Aah, gotcha. I def prefer to art drawn by people and do my own stuff, but I have poked with AI art a bit out of curiosity. Getting the prompts to do what you want can be tricky.

Here's one I did recently, something like "goggles and a coffee mug on a desk with dark lighting". I mean, I would've never thought it'd have the mug wearing the goggles, lol.

Thanks for the labels. I always question/call out non-labeled AI art when I can spot it.

This is actually art at this point. This is as thought-provoking as anything a human surrealist could produce. It's just a machine interpreting a prompt, but it challenges us to wonder HOW it concluded this is what the prompt was asking for. What is it telling us about how language works versus how we think it works? The mind boggles.

That is only part of the conundrum for me. I may set up something in the art gallery, but that would be after I compile some of the accompanying fiction. Mostly, I want to contribute to the thread, but I don’t acquire enough memes or photos to post those. So, AI generated non-earth individuals is my bag.

The art forum does have a general tag though for general stuff rho.

Doesn't look like it's been used much... looking back I don't really see much non-TF stuff since 2022, so that may not be general knowledge(though that could just be me). Also what about stuff where you're not the creator - say you commissioned it? Or It's just some cool piece of art you found that you had no hand in its creation and want to share? The latter arguably does fit in here(and sounds like you should still tag it if you know?), but I'm not sure on the former(though at least on my part, I'm not sure if people outside Mayhem care to see the stuff I've commissioned anyways since it's typically not TF-related, and I do have my thread in Mayhem).

Simply putting "AI art" is TOTALLY the same as taking the time to find/link an artist and the source when you can. After all, anyone who can't immediately tell the difference b/t AI and not, well, that's their own fault. We should also just also stop any discussion b/c this is the RANDOM IMAGE thread, not the RANDOM IMAGE DISCUSSION thread. /s

Anyway, I already explained why I would like to have AI posts clearly labeled. I'm not even asking for the name/link of the AI generator you used. But yep, it's totally my fault for requesting this, ruining the thread, and making you post that passive aggressive response that skewed my request out of context.
