I was a fool. I had it, viewed it as a placeholder ("just get a copy of the mold") for the red and black one (also so pretty), got that one, then sold the yellow. I don't know what I was thinking, other than...

Which was probably true. A similar story is another entry to this thread, Energon Tidal Wave -- never had one, but had a few chances to get it, turned them down because the money was never there at the right time, and justified it by saying I had the superior green/purple Armada one (not wrong per se).

But in the years since, I keep going back to that gorgeous clear green and the nWo Hollywood lightning, and just sour-grapes-gaslight myself into thinking something would've broken in all that clear anyway...

People complained about all the repaints back then, but they were pretty great. Energon Ultra Magnus is still the best Magnus in my collection.

This story, at least, ended well.

Oh, lord, this figure. This has to be one of the reasons I remember Energon in general so fondly, because it kicked off by delivering some neat new molds AND some very awesome redecos. Definitely one of my most anticipated toys of all time; I don't remember how far ahead we knew about this or this being planned for Armada. But I was full-on hyped for it early on, especially since it came with a whole Mini-Con team (and why not enjoy more Street Speed Team?). Finding out about the change in Mini-Con teams later on was barely a speed bump.

Couldn't wait for this to drop. Especially since this was a time well before local specialty stores had gotten things down to a science (I don't think mainstream retail had these line-padding redecos). I put in a preorder at one of maybe 2 or 3 stores that were even bringing things in (and again, they hadn't gotten it down so smooth so it took some finding out to learn they even HAD orders up). But he came in, he was everything I'd expected, and had that great "Earth-2" familiar-but-distinct feel of the homages from that era (that slate gray, nice. That powder blue face? Awesome).

The idea of Hasbro making a new Overload for their Armada OP is only interesting to me because of the possibility of an updated Energon Ultra Magnus. (and maybe Costco Overload.)

"Hey, look at me, I'm a Cheeto! No... I'm Cheetor!"

"Sorry, that name's already been taken."

"What?! Name me one use for that name that's better than mine!"

*whispers*

"...okay, yeah, that's pretty good, actually."

There was an independent toy shop in a (now closed) shopping centre near my university which during my third year, had a load of Tidal Waves, Ultra Magnuses and Treadbolts on clearance. Bought an Ultra Magnus for myself (as Energon UM was pretty rare, and Overload wasn’t properly released over here). Still think I could’ve made a killing by buying as many of those as I could, and later selling them on. But then, I’m not that sort of fan. Or person. Never been into this for monetary gain, I just love Transformers…

I was completely unaware that Energon Ultra Magnus existed until about 6 or 7 years ago. Happily I got one. I certainly never saw one in the store back in the day.

I vaguely feel like I might have seen it in stores once or twice, but never knew of its rarity and didn't have much spending money back then since I was still going off of allowance cash at that point, being still too young to have a job. So despite having seen it, I never bought it.

I did have Overload, at least, so I wasn't completely missing out on the mold. Just the cool deco.

Actually, now that I think of it, Energon Ultra Magnus isn't a "same-character recolor" anyway, so he really shouldn't qualify for this thread question since he and Overload are two different characters (Overload's Japanese name being "Ultra Magnus" doesn't count since Energon UM was a Hasbro-original release).

It's clear that someone had Ultra Magnus in mind when designing the toy, so it still kinda counts.
Checking the designers... hmm, yeah, I could see Eric Siebenaler or Joe Kyde having Magnus on the brain when designing it.

Had it been Aaron "I'm not a fan of G1" Archer himself, however, then yeah, coincidences all around.

But then again, Siebenaler also designed Armada Wheeljack and somehow didn't mean for him to end up looking so similar in shape to G1 Sideswipe in robot mode (as baffling as that sounds). 🤨

Energon Tidal Wave is another one that got given away when I moved. That one still stings a bit too. It shouldn't. I'm really trying to scale back my collection right now, and that's one that I can definitely do without. Still wish I still had it anyway...

Just imagine them making a redeco of the Titan. That would be amazing.
