Winter Storm 2026

I have no frame of reference to that because in 1993, I was living in Iowa worried the Mississippi River was going to flood us out after it got within a few blocks of our house.
My parents moved to Keokuk in 2003, and people still talked about the 93 flood. Some of the buildings downtown have the high water point marked on their walls. It was not a good time to be near the river, for sure.

I remember a few floods on the Mississippi when I was young, but what happened in the Midwest in 93 was WAY worse than anything I saw while living around Memphis as a kid.

What kind of wind are you guys getting? I'm obviously getting only the weak outer edge of this thing but the wind right now is ferocious.

Wind is fine here but I think you're getting high winds specifically because of the cold and warmth colliding.

Probably. We swung from 85 to 55 last night, so it was definitely a collision.

I'm so glad I'm still WFH. I also work in an area that would've expected me to come in. Get to work in my cozy PJs. I probably should clear my car it before the snow melts and refreezes.

It's supposed to hit the upper 30s tonight. FPL is warning that we could have power outages. I don't even know how cold air can do that. We haven't had temperatures like this since 2010.

Increased electric usage due to the cold, most likely. It can strain the grid and result in power outages. We're supposed to finally get above freezing on Monday or Tuesday. Can't wait. The pipe feeding the hot water heater froze so only hot water we have is what we heat up in a kettle. Still have cold water, thankfully. Been living in the 19th century for the past couple of days.

Power outages can also be from mechanical failure due to the equipment not being used to the weather, especially if the equipment is old.

Here, the state of emergency is such that the police and national guard are blocking off parts of the highway. We've achieved the winter variant of "Turn around, don't drown". Powerlines are holding fine so I'm safe where I am.

We're getting 45 MPH gusts tonight. I mean, they're calling it "gusts" but it's almost continuous.

edit: 40 degrees and falling. Feels like 31. For us that is nuts.

edit: 38 degrees and falling. Feels like 29.

Hug it. I'm going outside. I need to experience this.

If it's safe to do so, yeah, it's an experience. Here, we got a foot of snow. That's unheard of for the area. It's in the stage of being pretty right now but it's already attempting to melt so the refreeze is a concern.

Last storm skirted to the south of us, thankfully. We got a light dusting, nothing more. Good thing since I've got to head out first thing in the morning and we've still got a layer of ice covering a layer of snow in a lot of areas even if most of the roads are now clear. Supposed to hit the upper 20's today and possibly get above freezing tomorrow for the first time since last Sunday.

Might as well reuse the same thread.

So, we got another blizzard this week. Rhode Island officially beat the Blizzard of 78 for a new record snowfall. Side streets are still not all plowed three days later.

But, of course, the governor lifted the travel bans. And people are expected to get to work. Which is going to make things so much worse for everyone.

Too bad, I'm staying home.

YUCK.. We only caught the edge, thankfully. Got probably 8 inches and it was above freezing most of the day on Monday which cleared the roads at least. DID have some power issues Sunday night when the wind got to blowing, though.

We got the wind and blowing snow here in Maine, but only about 5 inches of snow. I still went to work and drove home at 3pm during the height of the storm. It wasn't a great drive, but I've driven through worse (for instance, a few weeks ago, I drove my family home from Prince Edward Island during a snowstorm with many roads in the province not yet plowed).

I grew up in the south. This girl isn't exactly confident when the roads aren't clear, lol.

We even got a bit down here for two days, but it's back up to the 70s now.

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

Cold air DOESN'T do that. Everyone turning on their heaters at the exact same time because of being cold, does that.

We didn't get a plow. We got a bulldozer.

Which did one pass, cleared one narrow lane of the street, and never came back.

And of course, it was the far side of the street, so we still had to shovel a good ten feet out into the street to get to that lane. Through about three feet of snow.

I hurt.

For your amusement/horror, here are pics I took. Our house is on the corner of the street, the wind blew everything our direction so it piled up in front of the house. We lost power for 6hrs when the blizzard hit. Next three days were spent shoveling, cooking, and for me, working from home. My last day off was Sat. I'm so tired.
