Republican Eric Schmitt attempted to catch him out in a lie - asking him if he was at a Hawks game in Atlanta, and then providing proof in the form of a blown up screencap of some messages to prove it when Smith denied it. Schmitt's accusation of perjury was shortlived as it turned out Smith had been at a Hawkeyes game in Maryland on the date in question.
Why would anyone care if he was at either game?

Basically that. He really doesn't get that the point of a federal government is to be able to provide support for it's states in case of everything. To him, he is the God King of America and anything that doesn't benefit him means it's got to go.
