Literally the first company to announce that they're going into business making and selling non-smart TVs is going to get all of the business from the people who are sick of this crap.

IIRC, budget monitor maker Sceptre has gotten into the TV business and supports a range of basic TVs without any integrated smart features

I'll look into them. I'm still using a Gateway monitor and I should probably invest in an upgrade before this thing dies on me.

Did I mention our oven had an RF chip in it that was broadcasting an open wifi network with the password in the SSID, 24/7, and the only way to turn it off is to either sign up for an LG account and use "the app", or just... take your wall mounted oven out of the wall, open up the casing, remove more casing, then remove even more casing, and then you rip that stupid chip out?

An open wifi network that... does what, exactly? LG isn't about to foot the bill for a complementary cellular connection for every single device they sell just to spy on people, are they?

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

All these stupid things use apps for notifications and custom settings these days: it's probably how it connects to your home network to push those functions. Cause the control panel and an egg timer aren't good enough for some people...

We have a fairly large wireless network. A bunch of computers, a couple of "smart" tvs, a printer and at least 1 cellphone at any given time. More depending on whose in the house.

Still not an excuse: ovens, washers, dryers, dishwashers; none of these things need to access the internet and anyone who tells you different needs to be beaten with a tree.

In the case of the oven, it's also providing its own network, like some printers do for ad-hoc printing. If you don't hook it to your networ and disable it then potentially someone could join said network(given the password is in the SSID) and presumably access and control your oven from outside your house. Another new application for wardriving. Also better hope your neighbors aren't technically proficient or like you.

Alternatively, it could have meshing capability if there are other devices from that Wifi manufacturer nearby with meshing capability, and mesh its way to someone else's device that IS on the internet. So a 5G chip being included isn't necessarily required for it to get online on its own.

And speaking of LG spying:

My phone isn't even on my home network, and it reports its location in random places. This week it's somewhere in South Carolina.

And windows just updated so here comes the fuckery!

My rog ally no longer has a virtual keyboard on the login screen. This follows windows telling me the password I used to login isn't valid to change my login options. I really do hugging hate windows.

So some "Ransomware Recovery Services" don't actually do any decryption; they just turn around and pay the Ransomware org and "miraculously" quickly decrypt everything. So not only is their business based on bad things being done to people, but also when you try to avoid paying the bad guys to not encourage and finance more of it, you end up doing so anyways unknowingly so these guys can make a quick buck as a middleman.

Reminds me of debt consolidation kinda. You have one entity demanding an obscene amount of money, you appeal to a middleman who pays considerably less on the grounds that "You're never going to see that much money from these poor-asses and you know it", still sticks you with a bill, and takes a cut.
