We live in a capitalist dystopia

I don't understand the kind of mindset one would have to be in to go to the trouble of actually producing a physical product no one is ever going to use just for the sake of a joke. A joke that'll be funny for five minutes if it doesn't just make everyone miserable thinking about the dystopian future we're all hurtling towards instead, as it already has for some people. Like, there's a million more useful things one could be doing with the time and resources that involves—time and resources that millions of more nobly-minded people would kill to have.

Probably pretty cheap for them, to be honest. The company already produces dummy security cameras so they likely had the molds and someone in marketing came up with an alternate use of it and they ran with it.

Oh yeah, there's a lobby for everything. There's a lobby for lawyers who specialize in frivolous lawsuits, for crying out loud. I wouldn't be surprised if telephone scammers have a lobby too.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

I read a novel like this once. The protagonist was an investment manager... for wars. You went to him when you wanted your 8% on human death and suffering.

Man, remember when it was the Republicans who were trying to block online gambling?

Oh, and a reminder that CNN's parent company is being split up and the half that includes CNN is probably going to be bought by the same monster who bought CBS-Paramount and fired Colbert. So uh, look forward to there being two Fox Newses in this country soon.

OAN and RSBN would have words with you... but they are tiny words, from pathetic people. No, there probably won't be two fox newses: CBS knows that they cannot compete with fox anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if they just push towards center, call themselves progressive, and staff it with C-list nobodies until they can justify shuttering it for the tax write off.

So about those RAM prices:

On October 1st OpenAI signed two simultaneous deals with Samsung and SK Hynix for 40% of the worlds DRAM supply.
and
And now time for the biggest twist of all, a twist that’s actually public information, and therefore should be getting discussed by far more people in this writer's opinion: OpenAI isn’t even bothering to buy finished memory modules! No, their deals are unprecedentedly only for raw wafers — uncut, unfinished, and not even allocated to a specific DRAM standard yet. It’s not even clear if they have decided yet on how or when they will finish them into RAM sticks or HBM! Right now it seems like these wafers will just be stockpiled in warehouses – like a kid who hides the toybox because they’re afraid nobody wants to play with them, and thus selfishly feels nobody but them should get the toys!

OpenAI bought the raw RAM supplies with no intention of turning them into chips just to starve out their competitors. Either that'll all become e-waste in a year or two, or we'll get a sizable crash in RAM prices if you can hold out until they have to sell off.... again assuming it doesn't just become e-waste by that point.

Spent part of yesterday shopping for a new desktop because my CPU fan has failed and they apparently don't make that model of CPU fan anymore.

Managed to find a cheap machine at Walmart, but aside from them, I have apparently been priced out of "owning a computer."

Why are you replacing the fan itself? Just replace the entire cooler. You'll have to rebond it to the CPU (after cleaning it.) but it's easier and faster than sourcing individual parts that generally don't make it to the retail space in the first place.

Swapping out an SDD is one thing, but I'm not confident of my ability to hug around with anything attached to the motherboard. I went to a professional and was expressly told (after they checked their supplier) that they don't have any compatible parts for an obsolete machine (why would they, when their business is selling computers?).

This is EXACTLY why we have anti-trust laws.....

The law only matters if it's enforced. And with the orange cancer in charge, skirting the law is just a bribe away.
