Basically.

It’s not notable otherwise, but this could be the start of a flood of Tories defecting. I suspect if the Tory vote collapses in local elections this May, there’ll be a whole lot more.

(The Tory party has moved so right-wing and pro-Trump recently that it’s virtually indistinguishable from the Reform party, FWIW.)

The Reform party announced a new major policy idea, cutting duties and taxes on pubs and alcohol, paid for by cutting welfare benefits for children. That as a proposal alone is grim beyond belief, but bound to be very popular among the British public…

So, the Tube of You suggested an animation in which a purple-haired young woman received a text, visited a female friend in hospital (who appeared to have dark skin, but from the video comments this may have been accidental), and then waved a Union Jack at a riot afterwards.

The comments were interesting, praising the woman as "England's last hope." Not the UK's, which is telling....

Thankfully the Grauniad was there to tell me what was going on.

First they repurposed stoner frogs, now alternative characters from pro-social games are being rebranded into alt-right icons.

Oh yeah, the Epstein files might be about to bring down the prime minister. (Not because Starmer himself is implicated; however, former minister Lord Mandelson is rather heavily implicated in the most recent leaks, and Starmer was responsible for his appointment.)

Good to know it's having an effect somewhere in the world.

I'm getting the impression that, despite their willingness to put people in office with abominable policies who are universally despised by the voting public and keep them there way too long (e.g. Thatcher), the UK does have an extremely low tolerance for anything that smells even slightly of a scandal. I'm starting to understand where the "Don't you think she looks tired?" thing comes from.

Maybe someday I'll understand why sharing state secrets with Epstein is a more arrestable crime than sharing little girls with him.

Authorities: Well, as it turns out Epstein was part of a sex trafficking ring that was trafficking underaged girls to him.
The women in question: Yes, and also trafficking us to all of these rich arseholes.
Authorities: Just as well Epstein is dead and his only accomplice in prison, so that's all done and settled and definitely no one else was involved in the sex trafficking.

It turns out when you get every single rich and powerful person in the world into your conspiracy ring, it means there's no one rich and powerful who doesn't have a vested interest in keeping those involved out of trouble, so even if the whole world finds out, no one can actually do anything about it.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

England, norway, sweden, denmark... Do not be mistaken to think the US is still setting standards.

Other than England, none of those countries are in dire need of stripping Epstein's accomplices of their power. They're doing well enough for themselves. Meanwhile over here it's basically the entire goddamn establishment that's been in on this in some way, either as actual clients of his or helping protect their secrets to preserve their power, and they all happen to need to be stripped of their positions of power and privilege for completely unrelated reasons.

But the only way this could lead to that happening is if the whole document were to be leaked to the public, and said public finally realizes that the whole system is in need of dismantling and the only way to make that happen is a revolution. And you'd frankly have to be a serious "just want to watch the world burn" nihilistic anarchist to pull the trigger on a leak like that from the inside, and people like that tend to not get jobs in national security for obvious reasons.

All those other countries actually doing the work to investigate themselves is probably going to make a fair few americans question why they can't have kind of thing in america. Which will just drive protesting and voter turn out. Plus... investigations usually make their evidence public when completed: so the world will end up with probably mostly unreleased stuff the US is trying to keep out of the public.

It doesn't have to collapse those governments over there to be good and useful for americans.
