Another episode of Transformers: Cyberworld? Already? But we just had one last week!
Okay, sure. Let's do this thing.
The sixth episode of this season is called "Clash of the Mighty 'Uns" (or "Halloween STORM at Sea: Grimlock VS Soundwave!", as YouTube calls it), and is described there thus:
A Halloween storm is raging across Cyberworld and something monstrous is waiting beneath the waves. When Soundwave ambushes Optimus Prime’s team, Grimlock stays behind and challenges the corrupted sea monster to a 1v1 battle so the others can escape. But against the raw power of Kraken Soundwave, even Grimlock may have finally met his match.
Well, Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I'm down for something strange in our neighborhood.
Here is the episode for your viewing pleasure:
And my recap/review. Beware of spoilers! (Hence the tag.)
Optimus, Grimlock, Snarl, and Wheeljack are storming the beach, searching for Elita-1 by following Soundwave's trail.
Prime checks in with Wheeljack, and is surprised to see on his device that Soundwave was in the jungle. Well, why not? Much like the Allspark, it reportedly has fun and games.
But it's not Soundwave's energy that OP saw, but Bumblebee, as Elita helpfully points out as she finishes Wheeljack's sentence while sauntering up. She gives them the lowdown she got from Jazz ("JAZZ?!?"), and Jackie fills her in on his part of the plan with the stabilizer.
Before they get much further, Soundwave comes ashore, and starts attacking the quintet. Under Grimlock's orders, Snarl (reluctantly) helps the others escape while Big Grim tackles Soundwave into a new game that just opened up.
And that's about all the story-centric stuff from here up until about the end. Grimlock and Soundwave wind up in what my wife guessed is a Fall Guys type of game, where panels drop away when stepped on, and whoever falls through all the layers to the water at the bottom loses.
Grimlock not only shows flashes of humor and heart in this episode, but a surprising amount of brains, too. He manages to outsmart Soundwave -- Soundwave -- and trick him into falling into the water, losing the game. There's something surreal about hearing Grimlock, of all bots, pronouncing that "brains beat brawn" (not that he's lacking the latter, either, of course).
But as we've seen before from Bumblebee, when you've got an Energon Surge going on, well, rules are closer to suggestions.
The program ends, and as the others are running, they see Soundwave walloping Grimlock, but good.
Snarl tries to intervene, but he's too late. The light fades from Grimlock's eyes as he shuts down, and Soundwave pronounces the Autobot as "terminated" before marching back into the waters from whence he came.
Snarl plants his sword in the sand by Grimlock's body and proclaims that "By Solus's hammer, you will pay for this" and gives a eulogy for his battle brother, the "King of Dinobots."
Then Grimlock's body glows and sinks into the ground.
The camera pans down to some sort of underground lair, and we see... someone... sitting in a chair. Who? Your guess is as good as mine, but he has what looks like might be Sky-Byte in some sort of tube nearby. He grunts like he just woke up from a nightmare. It's really brief, and we don't get much time to ponder what that was about.
So yeah, no two ways about it: Grimlock shines in this episode, and it's definitely a highlight for fans of the Dinobot leader, especially this version. Which is why it's such a shame that he dies at the end.
Yep, I guess some things never change: If you're toy isn't on the shelf, then you get shelved -- the hard way. But hey, at least we have lots of new characters coming to take his place, right?
I mean, okay. I don't know that he's dead or not coming back or whatever, or even if that's the reason. All hypothetical, of course.
But it's also that lack of knowing what comes next that helps reinforce the sadness of the moment. After all, he wouldn't be the first one to bite the big one in this series. If this really is it for Grimlock, he got one hell of a finale.
