I think he means that this is a pretty fresh reinvention for both, compared to what came before. Optimus has the broad strokes of his classic design, but he's also pretty different. He seems as far away from "Evergreen" Optimus as Armada was from G1 Optimus. And Megatron's a bull so no explanation there.

It's a pretty big departure from what came before.

I mean they each have toys that represent completely different bodies, not just the same character designs in multiple size classes. This Optimus Prime turns into a completely different truck than the first Cyberworld Prime we saw. And one Megatron turns into a bull and the other is a TLK Hound retool of all earthly things. This is not how recent lines have worked.
