To be fair, I had one of them growing up and thought it was neat. It was a black car that you pulled back on to charge up, then after it took off it would auto transform like Twintwist and Topspin. Granted it didn't have any articulation like they did....

Hot take: because his original toy was based on a penny racer, Bumblebee doesn't actually lend himself well to being made out of an actual Volkswagen Beetle.

This mostly just makes me wish someone would do a Hot Wheels scale figure based on the original Bug Bite. Or maybe that Proto-Bee character, Muffy...

Man, I would love a Muffy toy. That cut would be so deep that it would hit magma.

And somewhere there is a fan site with microscopic photos of a couple of them but not the one you had.

I'm not sure I agree. My favourite modern Bumblebee is the Netflix one, and that one had a very realistic VW Bug alt mode.

If anyone didn't understand why Bumblebees that are going for his 1984 cartoon look at all always give him a "hoodie," I think they'll understand now.

Mattel Transformers are a good example of why Takara matters.

-ZacWilliam, experience lad, you should learn to appreciate it.
Replace "Mattel" with "Star Wars" and the statement is just as true.

I actually agree, Netflix Bee is quite good, probably the best VW Bee ever, but:

There's always going to be a trade-off with a G1 VW Bee, either sacrifice accuracy to the Beetle like the penny racer or SS86 Bee, or sacrifice accuracy to Bee's robot mode character model to account for the entire back of the car. (Outside of Masterpiece, which is an entirely other class of engineering and pricing from most Bumblebee figures)

This is so early internet coded it's pleasantly nostalgic.

These days all we have is cut-up short-form videos of questionably-informed randos performatively pontificating on that exact same content, adding nothing, with their faces taking up more of the screen than the photos being discussed because you're here to see their reactions, bro, the better to know what opinions to parrot.

Tbh there's few other ways this Bee would have turned out. Realistic vehicle mode proportions so none of the chibi alterations to avoid... precisely this; a minimal transformation mostly based on the original; avoidance of partsforming and large visible seams in altmode (which probably kept them from a more WFC-ish approach where they could put half the roof bubble on the back).
