Heh, you know, these are making me realize I'm surprised no one during the Aligned era attempted to retroactively say that the following was the first onscreen appearance of Dark Energon:

AOTP Brawl did a pretty impressive job of folding up tank treads into his legs. Maybe something like that, on a much longer scale (lots of potential space in the crab claws) could theoretically work, and avoid the problem with rubber parts.

That seems like less an Aligned thing and more a Jim Sorenson AllSpark Almanac/AVP thing.
I dunno, man. There were some shenanigans like that going on with the Shout! Factory JG1 DVD subtitles.

Not to mention how all major Aligned media at the time seemed to abstain from any and all kinds of Transformer-specific energy sources or minerals that weren't energon. TF: Prime episode writer Steven Melching once mentioned in an interview that Hasbro had come up with a long chart listing all the different kinds of energon that they had created for their Aligned projects, and if it was anything like the number of different kinds of energon found in Takara's Arms Micron toys, then it seems like this chart of energon types was meant to streamline every TF energy source into being some form of energon. No more Nucleon, no more Angolmois Energy (we had DaaaaaAAAArrrrk Energon instead), no more Solitarium, no more Cybertonium, no more Rheanimum, no more Zodiac, no more Chokon Power, no more Destronium, no more nothing. Just all energon all the time, baby!

Can't say I agree with that idea. There's lots of different real world energy resources, why do Cybertronians have to be limited to just Energon?

I'm not saying that we can't have different varieties of Energon, or that those different varieties can have different names, but multiple energy resources are perfectly acceptable. Potentially confusing, but perfectly acceptable.

It was especially egregious when the Shout! Factory DVD subtitles for Masterforce referred to Chokon Power as "Earth Energon", "Star Energon", and "Spark Energon".

Because flesh-and-blood human beings from planet Earth totally have "Spark Energon" naturally coursing through their bodies.

... Rheanium wasn't a power source. It was an armor power-up.

Allegedly. I don't know that we *saw* any real difference after its application.

(Also, having a gas fit between molecules is arguably ok, except that's not really how ionic bonds [metal] work, and "denser" doesn't mean "harder," and no one shrank appreciably...)

The more I think about it, the dumber it it is, but it's still not a form of energy.

Nucleon *especially" shouldn't be a form of Energon. That was the point-- it was a trade-off, alternative fuel.

Anything Unicron-based could go either way; "Dark Energon" could be separate from normal-type but similar in some ways.
