I will never unsee the GoBot Powersuits...

I need to look it up as Nexus keeps making me think of the old Mighty Orbots, but I'm pretty sure there's no resemblance.

But don't they all have different connections? Aside from the shoulders and leg sockets, I mean? I don't have any yet to judge.

unluckiness

Somehow still sane

That’s really lame. Wouldn’t that mean that any differences when using Nexus would be very minor given how the combiner team leaders are basically just fillers for the frames?

Menasor and Superion are different, but very similar. You can't just plug Silverbolt into Menasor, but I can (and have) imagine Nexus being able to adjust bits to fit in either frame. And now that we've seen him, he certainly seems to have bits that could allow a measure of flexibility. Not sure if they'd end up in the right spots to accomplish it, though.

It's also entirely possible that, like how Superion and Bruticus's arm bots can fit in each other's frames but not Menasor's, that Silverbolt and Onslaught will be interchangeable with each other, but not Motormaster. I hope it's not the case that Menasor just gets left out of whatever compatibility will exist for all other Scramble City combiners going forward, but I guess I'd be ok if it's just that Superion and Bruticus get a special level of compatibility to enable a fuller FunPub Nexus homage down the line.

But yeah, from the front, it would basically be the normal combiner with a Nexus head.

I would've preferred, like, a gutted PCC style combiner. Rudimentary robot modes for the torso, arms, and legs, and simple or even ad hoc altmodes. A Weaponizer whose bits are people (or, uh, something). Basically put faces on parts that disassemble from the core body like Amalgamous Prime's. Coming up with something that interacts with the frame torsos is... Interesting, and actually kind of clever, but underwhelming.

Liege looks really good, will probably get it (I seem to be leaning most to the green-tinted Primes, Alchemist aside). It's one of the few renders that seems to have some shadows to it, which is interestingly on brand. I'm fine with it being more G2 comic than Aligned/Loki ish, although that would've been cool too. If this is what the Unicron Soldier is made out of (and it would definitely work), I may get that too. Would look neat next to the Arms Micron Unicron, which I'm sure it'll also be less frustrating than, heh.

Oh, wait, LEADER class? Oof. I may have to stick to just Liege then. Wish he and Nexus had swapped price points.

Smokescreen is... Idk, I had a bit of hope for this but I feel nothing from that design. The execution of the chest/torso could have been better. The proportions in general are okay, and the lack of kibble panel stacks is appreciated. But the torso is weird and the deco is kind of cheap looking (maybe a Beast Hunters deco would come across better). And why does it look like the shelf chest actually doesn't lock down flat?

Nexus Prime is a bit underwhelming at first glance, but I'm curious to see exactly what his gimmick is and how it works.

Simple, gimmick, he TRANSFORMS, nothing more, nothing less, looking at the images of the box, it shows no indication of combining, I.E: 1 of 5, he pretty much a stand alone bot who transforms into a space ship, thou he looks like he could be retooled into:
WFC/FOC Shockwave or into Energon Skyblast

So I honestly believe that he not going to have a combining gimmick as the combiner for this year is Bruticus!

As usual, I have zero connection to Nexus Prime, but I find him to be a farily standard-looking, blocky, old-school robit. He looks good and all, but seeing as I'm not really hip with the whole Primes thing, it'll be a fairly easy pass. Liege Maximo, on the other hand, looks extremely cool, and like Ghiaxus, is dripping with plenty of G2-style goodness.

I like both. Liege Maximo is everything I wanted from G2 Space Robot Satan. The color, the horns, the sheer menace of his look. He's just frikken spot on and I am here for it.

Nexus looks alright. They really do need to advertise his gimmick more otherwise there's going to be plenty of hate. But his base vehicle very much reminds me of the Wingblade from Energon. He does look like many of the 70s and 80s super robots and that's pretty cool.
I can't wait to get them all together. The group shot is going to be a very wild and eclectic look with no single design element through all of them and that's pretty cool.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.
Citizen
I'm all in on both (cause I'm getting 12 of the 13 regardless, and maximo just looks incredible.) but I will reserve opinion on nexus until I have him in hand. That robot mode looks awesome though.

I'm enjoying the Primes vicariously except for a few, but this is a very good point and I look forward to seeing it. I'd like a little more variety here and there, like someone with Animated like proportions or shapes and someone with a bit of the Beast Machines Evangelion-y aesthetic, but what's there is already a fun range of styles (traditional blocky for most, to Micronus and his armor, to Alpha Trion's rounded edges, to Quintus, to Amalgamous, to Liege Maximo).

Overall I think this team has tackled this interesting design challenge well.

Liege is cool, I'm on Team G2 (over Team IDW/Loki) and they did a pretty good job. I agree its sorta weird how they interpreted aspects of the head, such as the horns being a neck roll instead of on top of his head, and his mouth being more of a chinstrap mask, but I can see it. (I also assume it probably has to do with making sure the head stays a certain size for transformation and/or redeco purposes). He also sorta gives off Doom Eternal marauder vibes, which is enough for me even without the G2 connection ;)

Nexus looks like an interior bot missing its brute mode. If the rumors are true that he can be a combiner torso, I wonder if they'll ever put out limbs just for him (even as part of a non-mass-retail set). Combiner Wars had plenty of redecos and extra guys to use, but the current generation of combiners doesn't.

The Liege and Nexus reveals are equal parts impressive and confusing. Liege looks as G2 as possible and this very very good. Though making the spiky horned piece part of his back rather than being part of his head is… odd. I mean, it still looks good and probably makes head articulation better. Altmode is surprisingly good too. Also, the prevailing theory is that he might end up being the retool base for the Inicron Soldier that is coming at some point.

Nexus on the other hand is… both confusing, intriguing and a little disappointing. Most speculation is that he is a combiner torso and could thus be used with any limbs/frames. Which, if true, is certainly one way to do the first combiner.

This is the worst possible way to do this. If you display Nexus in combined mode, you can't display one of your other combiners. Unless you buy a duplicate frame, for Commander prices.

I always thought of CW Sky Lynx as the 'Emergency Backup' torso for the Protectobots (he fit their color scheme), with Rook as an emergency alternate limb. Maybe Nexus does a similar job?

Well, that certainly puts a spin on "daddy needs a new pair of shoes"...

Now I picture Nexus looking threateningly at the Combaticons and saying "Oh, good...shoes..."
