Someone on Facebook reminded detractors that USAID is only halted for a while to review and stopped to analyze that idea. You know what? 90 days of not feeding starving people is long enough to permanently reduce the need for such aid. At the end of 90 days they will certainly find that less money is required because people who starved won't need food anymore.

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

Food, medicine, access to information, education, infrastructure projects, all kinds of things.

You know what else 90 days is good for? Good for populations to understand that the US made promises it didn't intend to keep, and abandoned them when they needed it. Usaid was american soft power manifested into the world: and the need won't go away, so the people who fill that need will get that soft power; and those peoples loyalty.

It makes the US look even worse in the eyes of the world.

Pretty much.
Even if we have fair elections after this, which is looking pretty goddamn doubtful at this point, the damage Trump has done to the reputation and goodwill of America is incalculable. He has dismantled intelligence operations, compromised our safety, and straight up killed people by yanking funding.
He has destroyed the image of America in the eyes of the world and of the people here. All in the satisfaction of his own ego. Whatever else happens, we will always be diminished because of his time in office.

The writing was on the wall for that when we abandoned the Kurds in Iraq. The US has a track record for leaving allies behind whenever the wind changes. It's going to be a LONG time before that trust can be won back, if ever.

American stupidity put Trump in office once. Despite all of the harm he committed, American apathy put him back. Frankly, any other nation would be absolutely, abominably ******* stupid to trust us again.

I don't know if there's any point in history you can go back to and say we were a country worth trusting. Even after we fought the Nazis and won, the best anyone could bring themselves to say about us is that we "can always be counted on to do the right thing, after exhausting all other options."

You could trust us (and any other country) to operate in our best interest.

That’s gone.

We’re doing the equivalent of intentionally slamming our fingers in the door. Trump isn’t even operating in his *own* best interest. It’s just whatever he feels like at this specific instant. Which could be something the exact opposite three hours later.

And that's really the thing. He's hamstringing us. Making sure that when he's gone, we won't even have the tools to come after him, regardless of the fact that means we can't go after anyone else. We are being crippled because one man is choosing petty revenge over the wellbeing and safety of literally everyone else in the country.
Meanwhile the peasants rejoice while Nero fiddles.

Yeah, Blud's got it in the most important essence. The world has often counted on us because as fellow humans on this planet we've had a large shared interest and we've been a nation with resources and the will to take care of these problems that affect us as they affect others. Trump's selfishness and America First stuff are problems they'd have to adjust to, but his flightiness is what really screws it up. Because it isn't even down to leadership changing every 4 years anymore. American leadership can change 6 times in one day now.

I work in a metal shop. We're already having problems getting some of our materials.

On the other hand, I hate my job.

If there's anything Stupid is serious about, it's tariffs. He can be made to blink, though. Mexico and Canada were both able to convince him to drop them with VERY minor concessions on their part.

He's also announced that he has ordered the Consumer Protection Bureau to stop working. Like, cease doing anything.
His bootlickers are trying to spin this as an accounting thing. One rando I read said that there were millions being funneled through to 'unregistered social security numbers'. I declined to engage the idiocy.

Yea, their spin-machine is working overtime online to make the stuff Musk is doing seem legitimate.

I only took two economics classes. Can someone explain how this is going to fix my childcare?

An unregistered social security number is a 9 digit number that isn't anyone's social security number, I guess? What happens when money is sent to a 9 digit number? Where does it go? How come money never comes to my number? Or how do I know if it has?
