I am stunned that Alito was stunned by such an obvious, tightly-defined decision. This isn't to get aid money flowing again. This is to pay for things that have already been done by people that we hired to do them. How can Alito be stunned by this?

Because Alito is not a very good judge. He's very good at being a bigot and twisting words and concepts to fit his very narrow definitions of the world, but he is really not very good at being a judge. Or judging character.

Apparently Barrett has been receiving a lot of ire from republicans who don't like her sudden turn to the more moderate line.
This is an important lesson for all conservative women. They tolerate you as long as you town the line. The minute you display independent thought, they'll turn and turn hard.

These people are not your friends, in spite of their pretty platitudes. If you are not a cis white man, then the GOP will eventually move against you. They tolerate you for now, for what you have or for what they want in the moment. They are not your friends.

What's odd about this is that -none- of the Justices wrote an opinion on it. Not even the opposing ones.

The fight is not over. While this decision sucks, it simply blocks the injunction blocking the ban from going into effect. We still have a chance at beating this in court. Granted this will ruin some soldiers lives in the meantime, which really sucks and it's a definite setback.

Note that this is over whether district judges can block something nationwide, or only over the plaintiffs involved in the lawsuit against the illegal orders, not over the EO itself.

Frankly, if SCOTUS strikes down nationwide injunctions, I'd be okay because I guarantee that will bite the republicans on the ass a lot quicker and a lot more than democrats.

Maybe. But if they tank national injunctions, they're going to have to put in some kind of SCOTUS fast track that takes these nationwide issues and gets them to the court immediately for either nationwide injunction or a place on the docket.

They aren't killing them in mass yet. Also this is different than what the Nazi's did. Those prisons aren't being run by Americans. The concentration camps WERE being run by Germans. What the current admin is doing is trying to be all Nazi like but with more plausible deniability. In some ways it's worse....

Oh its gross and bad and needs addressed, but no, deporting illegal immigrants to shitty foreign prisons is not worse than systematically rounding up and exterminating your own citizens. That either exaggerates the state of things or diminishes the horror of the Holocaust. Neither is productive. Exaggerating how bad the things Trump does, and shouting "Nazi Germany!" At every corner only serves to obfuscate what he is actually doing for people that are less informed or engaged.

It's not "deportation" if they're being sent anywhere other than where they came from. At best it's a sentence to a penal colony without trial. And at worst... listen, people like Trump don't make a point of specifically having "undesirables" sent somewhere other than where they came from unless they can ensure they'll get worse treatment than if they had been.

Problem is it isn't just illegal immigrants. They aren't properly processing those they grab, we aren't sure how many American citizens have been 'deported' yet but I'm sure it's more than the admin would like to admit.. This is just phase one. We need to nip this in the bud before they DO go full Nazi. The end goal is ethnic cleansing. The expulsion and elimination of "undesirables" from society and eventually that will lead to eradication, not just exile. Frankly, I'm in one of the targeted groups and I was born here And my ancestors came from western Europe well over a century ago. They just haven't moved on to rounding up us trans folks yet.
