For anyone curious, the hover text for the above xkcd is "Originally, the ceremony used a variety of rodents and mustelids, but over time most people agreed it made sense to standardize on a specific individual ground squirrel in Pennsylvania."
Only kind of random! My son is on his high school's robot team, and their robot Bumblebee (circled in yellow) was the captain of the winning alliance* for the Southern Illinois (basically anything south of Chicago) regional championship! Now on to State to battle all of the Chicago area teams in a few weeks. The top 7 teams from that get to go on to the National Championship in Texas, so fingers crossed!
*All matches are 2-on-2. Qualification matches are with randomly assigned partners. After the day's qualification matches, my son's team was #1 seed, so they got first pick to select their partner for the entirety of the playoff portion. The other robot on the left hand side of the screen there is their partner, who was the #2 seed of the qualifiers and the other team from our town. They've actually been planning to work together in the playoffs for a while now and planning their strategies around each other, so it was great to see them succeed!

Ironically, the robot(?) to our right of Bumblebee looks like Bayverse Optimus Prime to me.
I can see it!
Very cool. Good luck to your son!
It's just a little past the 13th local time, but close enough.,
I'm in this picture and I don't like it....
