Well, we finally got caught up and watched the season finale this past weekend.
First of all, I feel like we didn't get to know the girl team as good as we got to know the men's team in previous seasons. I don't know why I feel that way, but I do. Like the end of season 1 of Ted lasso had a much tighter story. But let's put all that talk into the spoiler box!
All that being said, I would still give this season a decent to great rating, only that it fails to live up to the extremely high bar set by past seasons. I do hope that the series gets renewed for another season and soon so we don't have to wait three more years to get the next episode. I would even like to see some spin off series from this, as with a lot of the major characters having left AFC Richmond, you could easily follow them around. Heck, you could do that in an anthology series. Just give each character their own two episode series, and have them tie up at the end.

So, as I mentioned, we have a lot of stuff going on in this season. We spend the first episode basically showing Ted coasting through life at a job that he doesn't care about, trying to be convinced to move back to London. Its good episode but it takes up 10% of the season just to get Ted back.
We get a lot of weird stuff from Beard and Jane that they don't really tell much about until halfway through the season, in which Jane does some horrible things that are somehow turned into a popular stage play. Why someone would want to see that play, I have no idea. It was basically retconning the ending montage of the last season to make it where Jane wasn't pregnant and was using it to get Beard to marry her. I don't see why they did this though. It doesn't make any sense, and they could have just had Beard with a toddler this season and done a lot with that. Beard as a dad would have made a lot better than what we got of him trying to be young again.
Ted has basically zero development in this season. He doesn't get back with his ex, he gets shot down by the stage manager at the play house he went to, and he basically could have been left out of this season altogether and not affect anything other than letting some people on the women's team. His conversation with his ex about her relationship with their marriage counselor was pure retconning though. What she tells Ted just doesn't line up with the timeline of the show. I found it offensive to be honest, and I wished that the show had the courage to make its characters admit to what they did.
Mae is amazing in this season and I hate that they killed her off, but man what an emotional rollercoaster that episode was. I did love how she gave the pub to those three guys. Mae hiring Ted's son to work at the pub was great and really added some emotional punch to the story when she passed.
Speaking of the pub, the pub fight between the ladies team and that group of guys was great. You have to wonder why they thought the four of them could pick a fight with a team of 20 something soccer players.
The new coach was neat, and seeing her grow as a character was probably the best part of the season. By the end, when you finally get to see the going away present, you feel that she is ready to coach. I love the reveal at the end that it was her messing with Ted's chair all year long.
Roy and Keelie. If for nothing else, I will say that this subpar season was worth it just to FINALLY GET THEM BACK TOGETHER AND HAVE A BABY!
Like seriously, I was worried that Roy was going to mess it up by going on those 10 dates, and then started seeing that doctor lady. I ship this couple so hard that I have a tracking number for it. I love that line by Keelie when she says that she at first was worried that Roy would leave her again, but then was worried that he would never come back after he seriously started dating the doctor. Seeing them go through their everything goes wrong episode was great, and having them get back together at the end was amazing! Them accidentally getting pregnant was just the cherry on top. Roy's reaction was the absolute best too! His return of the Diamond Dogs in the season finale to talk about it was an absolute blast, with the new coach being added as a cat person was amazing!
I hate that Roy is moving to coach his old team, as that means we might not see much of him in future seasons. Roy and Keelie were the highlight of this season, so I hope that we get to see more of them raising their child. As a dad, I can tell you that there are many hilarious moments that can come out of that.
Rebecca had this giant storyline of trying to find out who was buying up all the shares of AFC Richmond that she sold last season. Turns out it was the crazy billionaire named Zelda that had been helping her out all year long. It wasn't a betrayal thing either, as Zelda just wanted to get control of the men's team so she would finally be taken seriously by the soccer community. That was foiled by pure luck and was a giant waste of time. I honestly thought it was going to be the billionaire from the previous seasons that hated Sam and then her for turning him down. She also messes up her relationship with her Dutch pilot boyfriend when he wants to move to London to be near her. Eventually they work through that somehow, and she realizes after Roy tells her that he is leaving to live his life, that she needs to live hers and proposes to her boyfriend on the spot in her office. It's really a great scene though.
We get a lot of cameos from the past characters, with most of them coming back for the last episode, like the entire men's team, minus Jamie Tart, showing up to support the women's team in their final match. Speaking of Jamie, he does get an awesome return halfway through the season on the new years eve episode. Him and Roy doing the Jump Around dance was great! No notes!
Even Nate comes back for the final Diamond Dogs scene! Rupert gets mentioned a lot during the who is buying the shares storyline, as he is their prime suspect, but since Anthony Head has passed away, we know it wasn't going to be him. They did dedicate the Mae's death episode to him though, so that was nice.
The new girls team is neat, but we only get to focus on a few characters. The crazy goalie named Boots, whose big character arc is playing with gloves, and it takes Beard and a broken finger to teach her to wear them. The striker named Gemma, who is a rich girl that has a promising career as a lawyer, but tries to do both. Eventually she gets injured and out for half the season, and then gives up on her promising internship. There are a set of Irish twins that I won't even attempt to spell or pronounce their names, but they are just stereotypes with no growth. There is the captain who is a single mom of two kids with their dad being a musician that is undependable. Not much development for her, but she coined the term Purse Ham, so she is my favorite. There is a couple that is in an on again off again relationship for comedic effect. And finally there is the one girl from the first season that Ted would always see on his walk to work. She has grown up and is on the team now at Ted's insistence. She over thinks herself, and has to learn to trust her instincts and flow with the game. She ends up as the starting striker for the final game due to Gemma still recovering.
Speaking of the final game, they don't really focus much on it. In fact, it's not really important at all, as the team clinch their promotion to the next league level with their previous win.
