Takara Missing Link G1 Series

You know gosh darned well that they’ll be doing a “anime colors” version that all us Dinobot junkies will double dip on.

I’m going to TRY and be good…but we’ll see how they tweak it for the “anime version”. By and large, I do find a larger attachment to the “slightly off” toy designs when it comes to Missing Link, so I’m sure I’ll end up getting the “toy version”.

I’d imagine

-blue eyes
-silver paint over all the sticker detail besides the legs and
-red paint over the sticker detail on the T-Rex abdomen
-red sword
-drab yellow instead of gold chest, talons, and Dino neck
-MAYBE red paint on the tops of the legs connected to the pelvis.

You know, it's actually kinda funny that they went with the silver sword for the toy-accurate deco instead of giving it to the cartoon-accurate deco not just because the original toy had a red sword, but because Grimlock never actually had a sword in the cartoon at all and so the cartoon deco is the one that could have gotten away with the sword being any color at all.

Grimlock used a sword in the episode Madman's Paradise, but it wasn't "his" sword, just a generic one that didn't resemble the one the toy came with (and wasn't red).

Grimlock's sword was silver on the package art for his original toy, though; I guess they're being more accurate to that (and presumably to what the toy would have been, with the red being a late change for cost and/or safety) than to the toy itself.

Grimlock's sword was silver on the package art for his original toy, though;
Which was itself recycled from the original Diaclone package art, as well.

Maybe there were plans at one point for Hasbro to keep his sword silver, but then paint costs forced them to switch it to red.

"Correcting" the sword feels like mission creep, but I think I'm okay with it. It just makes the thing look even more 80s.

That is one tempting Grimlock!

It really is. I bought a ML Bumblebee, which I told myself would be my one example of the line since it was all priced out of my comfort zone. But I have a huge weak spot for dinosaurs, and the fact that the Missing Link treatment results in improvements in both the robot mode AND and alt mode makes this hard to resist. I'll have to see what the price ends up being. PROBABLY won't buy it, but I'll wish I had.

I'm still torn on whether I want to go in on either version of Magnus. However, this Grimlock is a must-have for me.

Watch it turn out to be a surprise that we're only seeing the sword from one side being silver while the other side is actually red.

Finally got ML Prototype Arcee with my POL; as my first foray into Missing Link, I don't feel like her transformation is overly inauthentic, especially for a design that never actually transformed before. I need to get the rest of my movie-era figures out and do some group photos.

I will say, I think I would have preferred the white and pink color of the toon version, but I definitely believe the head sculpt of the prototype version is closer to what we would have gotten back in the day. If they had offered a prototype head with the toon coloring, I think that would have hit my sweet spot just a little closer. As it is, if they retooled this figure to be a Rebirth-accurate Headmaster in toon colors, I might be tempted to double-dip if the price wasn't outrageous...

It's fascinating how well Grimlock works. The thighs are thin and the hip articulation is awkward, but other than that it looks kinda normal.
