Strongly considering the Matrix but damn, is the Autobot symbol on the display base not being centered bothering me a lot more than it should.

He still a pass for me, I bought a 3D printed & painted part that deals with the back of the Siege Astrotrain ages ago and then later one for Galaxy Shuttle, this one, he looks like a total mess, a product of bad desgining in robot mode, if this is the best they can do with a leader class budget then likely desgins will start to look more terrible going forwards for characters

Man, after watching a certain Youtube review of Astrotrain, it's a definite pass. The nearly translucent, unpaintable grey plastic is just ridiculous and the kibble is so badly managed it's sad.

He does look like a simplified version of Toyworld Evil Star. His robot mode may be hideous but both altmodes were immaculate. I kept him around after my 3P CHUG purge specifically for train mode and he came with some tracks to place him on.

Also because they released an even cheaper and more toon accurate version, destroying any value he had lol

That really doesn't look accurate to the character model. Did he have a slightly different one in the movie?

Just... all these little differences. And I'm not even talking about "Oh, there's a big hinge visible here" stuff, I mean like paint detailing. Everything is either slightly off somehow, or nonexistent.

The most glaring one to me is his lack of red abs.

On its own merits, I like it, but as a "this is what you saw on the screen, now in the palm of your hand" representation? Really misses several marks.

Other pics I've seen recently show that apparently the train mode has space in it to hold... stuff, whatever. Which is neat, but it's unfortunate that that was a design priority. To me, that's definitely not worth any of these compromises.

Even outside of the "screen accuracy" line it's a bit meh, although framing it as a toy homage works better for it. Those arms (the elbows especially) and torso are... uncomfortably third party ish. From the earlier years before they learned to use shapes that weren't rectangles. (Funny enough, the 3P one that came to mind was DX9 Chigurh... and between that, SS86, and Evil Star, it looks like Weirdly Elongated Astrotrain is just a genre unto itself.)

SS86 Astrotrain‘s only real “gains” are SLIGHTLY better alt modes. Siege geebles or not, I think that version, overall, offers the best overall execution.
I'm thinking this as a whole package looks better than the Siege version, but Siege set the bar so low it's on the floor. It's disappointing that this is as far as "better Astrotrain" got us.
The most glaring one to me is his lack of red abs.
I believe they said that that part wound up on the unpaintable plastic sprue which is probably the the cherry on top of all the flaws the robot mode is showing off. Toyhax is going to make a killing on selling red abs + three dozen extra stickers you don't care about sticker sheets.

I mean, I'm a sucker for steam engine altmodes, and that one is very nice and a huge improvement over the Siege one, so I'll likely get it just for that.

But, man, that robot mode is just embarrassing. Siege nailed its robot mode by comparison.

Shuttle mode's also pretty whatever. Astrotrain's shuttle is known for being boxy, which the Siege version matched well enough. This just looks like a generic shuttle in Astrotrain colors, rather than being Astrotrain's shuttle specifically.
