I saw Strange New World s4 ep5 Level 5 Transporter Accident. Spoiler thoughts in the spoiler space.
Well, that was pretty fun. Could have been funnier but that would just be your own thoughts coming up with scenarios that you wanted them to do.
Would have loved more of the science stuff. It really would have been fascinating.
The third thing from the ending was great and I would have been very happy with just that.
Loved the initial action scenes, hehe
Pelia looked the best, hehe.
The male antagonist is familiar. I knew he was someone but I couldn't quite tell because the skin color was distracting. Had to look up the cast and I knew it, haha
There's two main things I wished they could have done / not done.
Overall, fun ep. I watched Angel's Smile Time and Community's ... i think it was in the supposed gas season? This was just above average compared to those eps but I was smiling the whole time while watching, hehe
First thing is I really would have them NOT turn it into just a dream! It's ridiculous enough to keep it as a sci-fi anomaly thing! It would have been awesome on record.
Second is I thought the other classic Hollywood narrative would be that it would end with Spock getting a taste of the puppet life, to see his puppet version. The ending could have been the usual 'think they reversed the problem, turns out there was one mistake' ala crew back to normal but Spock is a puppet. Then 'laugh about it and The End'. Shame, because we're cheated out of a puppet Spock.
The male Orion was Boyle from Brooklyn '99! Man, would that he wasn't. He just stood out too much. Didn't want an extra to steal the spotlight from the puppets.
Loved the space exploration ending. Loved it. Also the initial panic, running around moment. And the ineffectual fighting. Very fun puppet madness action, hehe
The science was great. No deaths or injury. But why say they're still organic? Just say not. Would have liked to know how the mind meld worked. Or if they brought the spirit or katra or whatever into the explanation.
They could havr leaned into 'toon force' but i don't know puppets falls into that category. Scotty escaping being pinned was sort of like Roger Rabbit only being also to get free of handcuffs when it's a funny moment. I don’t think the science can explain it. Do puppets even exhibit hammer space abilities?
Shame about losing the chair.
Pelia is sooooo pretty. She had the best hair and lipstick, hahaha
Puppet sex? Wha?
Even if I didn't get the ending I wanted, the ominous stare was still sorta cool. Still prefer the Spock puppet ending though and not making it into a dream, boo!
I was kind of whelmed, really. Wasn't really into the puppet idea to begin with, which I suppose didn't predispose me towards it either. Didn't dislike it or hate it like some of the reactions I've seen, just feels like it was a thing that happened. At least the actors and production crew had fun with it, I'm sure.
Biggest miss for me was the solution to the invasion. I was expecting Spock to go back to the transporter and puppet-fy the Orions, rather than do the air thing, as at first it looked like he had gotten an idea about it. Or at the end when they were beamed into the brig, have them be puppet-fied and sent back to their ship instead, would have been a very Trouble With Tribbles-esque ending.
At least until the reset, which at least conveniently solved the one with a hole in the middle.
Oh, I didn't even think of that solution, hehe. That would have been funny but I do think the one they did was smart, cuz with all the talk of Spock being needed, he really didn't need to do anything at that point.
I don't mind the "just a dream" ending, because, as a dream, it highlights some interesting things about Spock's psyche (how he imagines himself as the only effectual person on a ship full of helpless puppets, how he sees absurdity as their main advantage, to which even Vulcan logic must succumb. . .).
If they had ship's counsellors in the 23rd century, they'd have a field day with this.
Leonard McCoy served some of that function on Kirk's Enterprise, but that, of course, would raise its own problems.
One wonders how much of McCoy's seeming anti-Vulcan bigotry was an attempt to reflect Spock's "Humans are absurd" bias back at him.
"The Chimes at Midnight" (set in the 2280s of the Spockless "Yesteryear" continuity) had McCoy adjusting to be Kirk's "voice of reason" in balance to Thelin's more impulsive nature, so it is certainly possible.
Specificaly: the Doctor is all about photonic rights in season 6 and 7 for a long spell, his character didn't really grow much.
Seven of Nine went from de-assimilated human to The Spock.
Janeways just oddly written, I read a hypothesis she was bipolar and it fits!
Season 1-4 shown some character growth then season 5 onwards lost that.
To be fair though, that last two parter was great! The only thing that was missing was them finally getting to spend some time on Earth. That show deserved a follow up episode where we see everyone come home. Janeway gets her dog, Tom and Belana show admiral Paris his grand child, 7 and Chakotay having a real picnic on Earth, Tuvok with his family getting treated for his condition, and Lt Kim showing off the new pips to his parents.
Oh no, you can't show any ending, fans may have wanted, a recent comic shown the ship was hijacked by Species 8472 who'd infiltrated Starfleet and posed as the admirals who boarded the ship as it arrived in Earth orbit and they pulled it into fluidic space to answer for their crimes against 8472.
With all the movie and tv inspired themes for the season, I was watching the cold open, trying to figure out what sort of homages they would do. Didn't expect a harrowing, disaster of high intensity ep, geez.
Most human element, I didn’t like but is still the most edge of your seat.
The Una part could have been a bigger deal. I thought it was terrifying predicament. The pressure was too much.
How many people died? Some have plot armor but others... nope.
Again, Pike needs to do more heroic stuff.
Not wild about the solution but, wow, intense ep. I was looking forward to a fun, homage-y episode of SNW again and really didn't expect this level of deadly serious business, haha
What is the homage? Is it 24? The ep was less 55min but the countdown was 50min? Credits as extra time?
The gravity crushing bit was horrible! They cooould have shown someone crushed to death but they didn't. Just a leg break.
Cool bit on Spock but we know he has plot armor.
M'Benga, dang. I didn’t know if he would survive.
I don't think i like the 'magic' particles saving the day. Too much coincidence. Can heal, can make fuel. I actually thought they would do a time jump back and save the people who died. Probably would, if M'Benga and Spock died.
Quiet moment with Scotty in the tubes with Pelia. When there was an explosion in the back, I thought Scotty was dead too.
Too intense of an ep. Felt like a disaster flick. Nice but I suddenly missed the funny homage stuff, haha.
SNW does love it's mood whiplashes going between episodes.
M'Benga does come up in a couple episodes of TOS, so he did have plot armor, but I was expecting something to be done with the medical transporter at first, given the "last time" blurb brought up his daughter. There's a Dr Piper as CMO in the second TOS pilot with Kirk, so this was also setting up him leaving probably, and Boyce(who was in The Cage) coming back is also a sort of setup/explanation for M'Benga coming back in TOS after he leaves to make room for Piper and McCoy.
The neutrino thing I've seen pointed out could be a lead-in to how medical tech and replicator tech gets -so- much better between TOS era and TNG era. Now that they know it works, they just have to figure out a better way to harness it and find or generate more.
Heads up, got listings at my local AMC for anniversary showings - they're going with a movie and an at least thematically relevant episode, starting this weekend. Space Seed and Wrath of Khan (of course), Amok Time and Search for Spock, and City on the Edge of Forever and Voyage Home. I'm down for at least WoK and SFS; Voyage Home is perfectly fine, but not top tier for me.

Nice! Voyage Home would be a good one to see. It was the first film that I remember going to see as a kid. My dad took my older brother and me to see it. Good times.
