I was showing one of my kids a little documentary on Toys R Us, and it mentioned that the Canadian stores were having a lot of issues and were going into their version of bankruptcy. So my Allsparkers of the North, what is going on with your stores?
The ones I frequent when I'm in the Maritime Provinces have all shut down within the past few months. I was really looking forward to stopping by a few when I was in New Brunswick and PEI a few weekends ago and was disappointed.
I haven't had an update in a while, BUT: the local one (the one I went to through out my entire childhood, and applied to work at hundreds of times.) closed just after christmas. The OTHER one was staying open until they had a buyer for the property, but also planning to close.
So... closing.
Which is a crying shame because now the only real option for toys for the majority of consumers is walmart.
This is probably a ripple effect from something I posted about in the Hasbro Business thread:
Late last summer, Everest Toys (a major Canadian toy wholesaler) abruptly closed. Doug Putnam's Putnam Investments seems to be either having issues or simply dumping its entire toy portfolio.

Interestingly, even as Everest and TRU (and HMV, as a store-in-a-store thing within TRU) were spiraling down...he and his firms were still buying dying/dead retailers. He even expressed interest last fall in saving various UK boutiques. I feel likely something...off...is going on here, especially with how abrupt the Everest Toys and TRU situations developed.
It really sucks. One of my favorite things about moving to Maine has been the frequent trips we make to Canada. A highlight of those trips has been stopping at Toys R Us. It sucks to lose them a second time (and even more so for those that lost their jobs or their childhood stores).
At least I still have Canadian Tire, which might be my favorite store ever.
On a side note: I apologize for causing the men's ice hockey team to lose to the US. I bought a Canadian Olympic hockey jersey at SportChek in Charlottetown, PE on Valentine's Day.
