(Aside: as a kid I first learned of the character as "Tails", then a while later found out it was "Miles 'Tails' Prower". I was so thrown by him being given a full name that I just ignored it. As such, never having read it or said it without "Tails" in the middle, I never actually realized the "miles per hour" pun until I was an old man.)
The pun doesn't even make all that much sense for someone like Tails, since it sounds like it's meant for another speed-type character like Sonic, yet Tails's whole thing is flight maneuverability and mechanical geniusness, not speed first and foremost. Sure, he's fast, but not the fastest, as that isn't his main thing like it is for Sonic.

Like, I would have more likely believed that name to have been Sonic's actual name and that he preferred "Sonic the Hedgehog" as a cooler sounding nickname over the goofier sounding real name.

Because the name predates him having thos attributes. Per Sonic Retro,
According to a 2023 interview with Beep21,[8] when the design of Tails was pretty much finalized, Yamaguchi didn't have a name for him, with the character simply known as "FOXフォックス". He credits the team as a whole coming up with a new name: Naka had originally called him Mile, but that didn't meet the team's standards for a viable character name and was altered to Miles. As revealed in a 2025 interview with Sega Retro's Alexander Rojas, artist Brenda Ross then suggested the name Miles Prower as an obvious speed-based pun on the term miles per hour,[9] and the name stuck (winning over the Miles Monotail, pitched by executive Al Nilsen[10][11]). However, Yamaguchi thought the word Prower sounded strange in Japanese and changed it to Power. This was met with significant protest by the American side of the team, claiming the new name just wouldn't work. From these efforts, and alongside Yamaguchi not wanting this character's name to imply he was more powerful than Sonic, the name Miles Prower was kept.[8][12] Despite initially wishing to change the character's name, Yamaguchi reportedly preferred (and still prefers) the name Miles over Tails. This sentiment was shared by the Japanese staff, and as a result the Japanese version of Sonic 2 replaces Tails' name in the life icon and Act clear message with Miles.

That's hilarious.

It's funny that they went through so much silliness about the name "after the design was finalized", meaning they were looking at a cute fox with two tails and they still didn't know to name him Tails or Twintail or Tailspin (but was that one taken) or whatever. Just giving him a one-word English name like Mile seems like a pretty "Japan design team" thing to do (and indeed there's a Micron by that name), and I would've assumed that every animal in this world is just fast (with Sonic being fastEST) if they'd named him that. (Same with "Miles Prower", might've just figured oh, speed is the animal gimmick here maybe. But I was too hung up on "wait, this guy is Sonic and this new guy actually has a full drivers license kinda name?" to even get there.)

But for it to go through these funny language-barrier hurdles... I can imagine watching the back and forth with some popcorn and being very amused and/or baffled.

What a glowup over that abysmal T30 figure.

I love the tail-stand pose, he looks like he's doing haiku for a Seaworld show.

"They call him Flipper.
Flipper, slower than lightning.
Which explains the burns..."

I got one coming in with Amazon points. I had a TM2 Cybershark, but never had Skybyte. Is this the first version of him without a permanent body bend?

Mainline wise, yes.
One bit of articulation that hasn't been mentioned is that the fin blades on the tail can move. Not just the yellow ones, but the blue and white so it can be like a pincher as well.

God it's such a good figure.

In the show, that arm was called his "Shark Spike" in English and his "Anchor Arm" in Japanese (and, erroneously, one time in English in Episode 20).

Really should've found a way to paint, idk, a burning speed effect on the front of that car hood or something so he has the red shoes.

I am fairly certain that SEGA would probably not have allowed that.

Honestly, the best bet for getting around that would probably have been to have fold-out feet, but maybe it was too late in the design process to make that work.

Red’s a bit too glossy but nothing an appropriate topcoat can’t fix after the paint properly cures.
How's it look in vehicle mode, though?

I'd still like this set...
