Armada Megs/Galvatron’s dialogue in the show always sounded like bad AI-generated generic bad guy word salad doing a jive David Kaye impression, and now that’s all I hear every time I’m handling my Legacy Armada Megs or Galvy.
Having finally gotten to watch the original Japanese version of Armada just last year, I finally have a better grasp on what the show was trying to do with its particular depiction of Megatron, which got lost or at least obscured in the English dub.

See, we know Beast Wars Megatron. He acts like he's high class, talks like a sophisticated intellectual with a dash of hamminess. Bob Forward even once confirmed that they basically cribbed Megatron's personality wholecloth from the character of Patrician from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett.

By having David Kaye do a variation of his Beast Wars Megatron voice for Armada Megatron, it was like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, because in the original Japanese version, Armada Megatron is neither classy nor a sophisticated intellectual. He's instead more like a barbarian warlord. A brutish tyrant with a bit of Viking or even Klingon influence in him. He's all about power and strength, might make right, and believes only he should have all the power for himself. He talks a good talk, but it's all boasting and bravado, not wit or manipulation (that was more Thrust's role).

Using David Kaye's Megatron voice for that kind of character just feels really jarring, when he's trying to sound like a civilized individual but having to say and do such brutish things and don't jibe with the voice at all.

It's actually very logical if you follow it. The horns on Armada Megs' helmet can be seen as viking/barbarian helmet horns, and the dynamic of a very direct "might makes right" warlord with a shadowy, manipulative aid/strategist secretly working for a shadowy force is a very well known setup.

Exactly. Armada Megatron wasn't the calculating schemer, Thrust was. Yet, David Kaye's Megatron voice was played for the part of a calculating schemer when the character it was applied to was not, meaning it didn't suit that character.

I genuinely wouldn't be shocked if the dubbing team was left out of the dark about what was intended. The whole thing seemed like a seat of their pants deal.

Indeed. The dub started production before the Japanese scripts were even done, and started airing in the U.S. months ahead of the Japanese broadcast. They couldn't have known what was intended with how much of a rush job it was. All because Cartoon Network wanted to meet a certain deadline for the show.

Not to mention that this was still the age where English dubs of children's anime weren't keen on being faithful to the Japanese versions, so they wouldn't have even bothered to try matching Megatron's Japanese portrayal anyway, let's just makes it all the more frustrating over how Armada was so mishandled on the English dubbing side.

"Next time, on Beast Wars!:"
*music starts as Dinobot wearing a distinctive helmet races by on Transmetal Rattrap painted white and red, chasing a goat herd waving a stick*
"Goad Speed Racer's....goad Speed Racer's...goad Speed Racer's GOOOATS!"
*Optimus Primal stares blankly, quickly reads through the translated script, finds out he and Cheetor are going to be riding in a trunk the whole race for some reason, then throws it away, curses Primus and all his works, and converts to Buddhism*
-it would explain a lot of his later work, really. And having read some of the later manga I'm not sure that wasn't pretty close to Takara's pre-Armada plans.
