Analysis: Russia Close to Re-taking Kursk Oblast Territory

Russia appears to have re-taken almost all of the area in Kursk that Ukrainian forces had captured last year, according to multiple assessments and geolocated footage. Ukrainian forces have avoided encirclement, instead prioritizing withdrawals from areas with the heaviest fighting. Drone attacks from both sides have been heavy.

Several villages near the Ukrainian border have been re-taken by Russian forces. These areas have seen a higher concentration of Russian troops than most others, indicating that Russia may either push into Ukraine after the Kursk Oblast is secured or intends to maintain a stronger border security force after Ukrainian forces are fully expelled.

The odds appear high that Ukraine no longer has a foothold in Russia in the coming weeks. The calculus will now shift to whether or not Ukraine can gain strategic advantages by pushing into another region of Russia. This could certainly happen as Ukraine intended to use the Kursk incursion as a bargaining chip with Russia in the coming months. Without that particular negotiating ability, Kyiv’s position is weakened.

Hey remember when Russia was getting curb-stomped even without our help and we thought this was going to end quickly?

Also seeing word that Putin has proposed a 30-day ceasefire, provided any arms-shipments and intel-sharing with Uktraine stops during that period. Seems reasonable at first blush, until you realize that Russia doesn't depend on external arms like Ukraine has been forced to, so this will let them re-arm while Ukraine can only consolidate. It's purely a benefit to the Russian side of things, not a compromise. Also if the Europeans don't agree(as they probably shouldn't to those terms), Putin can use that as a pretext on the world stage to try and make it look like Ukraine are the aggressors, and give Trump plenty of reason he can use to try to back out and appear reasonable to people who aren't paying attention to all the details.

Also saw this from Zelensky:

The contrast between Ukraine's actual president being duped by Trump's offer and Dekafox seeing right through it is staggering. It's one thing to believe that every single one of us is better qualified to run the US than Trump, but I kinda still had more faith in other world leaders...

Kremlin "Satisfied" by US Taking NATO Membership Off The Table for Ukraine

The Kremlin said Monday that it is satisfied by the United States’ position that Ukraine cannot join NATO, as discussions around ending the war between Russia and Ukraine continue.

"We have heard from Washington at various levels that Ukraine's membership in NATO is excluded," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today. "Of course, this is something that causes us satisfaction and coincides with our position."

He also claimed that Ukraine’s desire to join NATO “is one of the root causes of this conflict.”

"President Putin and the Russian side remain open to seeking a peaceful settlement. We are continuing to work with the American side and, of course, we hope that this work will yield results,” he added.

Sunday, US envoy General Keith Kellogg said that Ukraine joining NATO was “off the table.” This comment echoes those by other US officials in recent weeks.

US President Donald Trump wrote on social media Sunday that he hopes a peace deal could be achieved this week, pointing to the potential of both countries engaging with the US economically after the war ends.

Japan Lends Ukraine Funds Based on Frozen Russian Assets

Russia is responding strongly against Japan after the country signed an agreement to lend Ukraine just over $3 billion for reconstruction, a loan which is backed by frozen Russian assets.

The funds are being provided through the G7’s “Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration for Ukraine” (ERA) program, which has set a goal of providing $50 billion to Ukraine. The ERA program seeks to identify, freeze, or sell Russian assets to raise the funds.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters today that the seizure of assets would damage diplomatic relations with Japan.

"We have long warned the Japanese side that participation in illegitimate experiments with the sovereign assets of the Russian Federation in any form...will be regarded by us as complicity in theft," she said.

"Tokyo has cynically expressed its hope that these actions will not have a negative impact on relations with Russia. We have to disappoint them - such actions will certainly and inevitably have a negative impact on relations with Russia. We regard such a step as extremely hostile, as treacherous. It is inadmissible under both legal and universal concepts."
