In hindsight, I think MP-22 Ultra Magnus was a turning point. There was a terrible looking 3rd party MP scale Ultra Magnus in the works, very "reimagined" and "modernized" looking, and the day it went on sale Takara trolled them by revealing their much toonier Ultra Magnus. The unavoidable comparison between the two was eye opening. In that particular case, toon just looked better.
I still like a lot of CHUG. But all of the characters have been redone by now, some of them better.
I liked the idea of Classics where they gave modern altmodes to G1 characters. That's something I wish they'd bring back. The toys weren't always good but stuff like Ironhide being a soccer mom SUV or Bumblebee being a hatchback was nifty. Not that current Generations is bad, but having characters show up in half-century old altmodes isn't my thing. Maybe they can get around to it by the next soft reboot when they're done with the Primes.
I don't dislike the G1 cartoon aesthetic but it's grown stale, what with MP, Generations and the transformiliion non-transforming TF merchandise lines all doing the same thing.

I like sticking with the original alt modes just because today's cars are indistinguishable roll-safe bubbles.
i mean 80s cars were just indistinguishable boxes
