I bought red Twin Mill. He’s alright though now I’m having second thoughts about picking it over the blue one.

The Timelines figures are more expensive than I expected. Not paying for a bunch of novelty-themed Deluxe figures of the same four characters I'm mostly sick of.

Takara makes toys and isn't ashamed of that. They know how to overcomplicate a design when they feel like it, but I think they're trending away from that.

It may just be that the competition is really bad at it. Bandai's $300+ Chogokins to this day can't get the hang of forearms that open to flip hands in and out and insist on slide-out fists that end up tiny and leave a gaping track in the arm, then call it a day and slip in some separate part hands that aren't baby-sized.

Chogokin figures seem like they focus more on having fancy and flashy features than on having features that actually work.

From my experience they just focus on being heavy. My poor Gaogaigar can’t even do the simplest of action poses anymore because his shins are pretty much giant slabs of metal, he has a gigantic backpack and his hips are all friction. Dino Megazord has a similar issue but less metal and a less topheavy design means it’s not nearly as bad. Dragonzord’s shoulders disintegrated and I had to 3D print replacement joints. Daimos, Voltes V and Combattler are doing alright because they’re relatively simple humanoid designs and don’t have much metal. My Shin Mazinger is in storage but aside from being clunky and somewhat skinny he at least was alright.

I'm not sure SOC Xabungle's hips can move independently. Mine sure feels like they don't, but I can't believe they would screw up such a simple thing in 2004 or whenever they made that thing. Articulation wasn't unfathomable technology at that point.

Has anyone yet made a better Xabungle that isn't a Legoformer? I don't know anything about the anime but I like the design.

The Moderoid released three or four years ago can mostly transform with only the cockpit part having to partsform between modes. The Shokugan came out this year but is a complete Legoformer where parts have to be added or removed.

Looking at photos of the SOC, it appears that they can move independently but that the forward hip motion is heavily restricted.

Looks like Rising Force actually is making progress on ther FOC Bruticus. Looks pretty good although the ankle joint being so exposed kind of sucks.

This is a one man operation and he doesn’t have any recolors planned, let alone remolds. Maybe he’ll do them later on.

Mecha Invasion who made the all-in-one inverted devastator showed off Grimlock. Sparse details but it’s a 5-bot combiner with Grimlock as the torso. It looks a little derpy but overall good, probably will work if you characterize it as an updated cartoon Grimlock.

They’re also making Combaticons but that’s a different line with MP scaled individual members and 50 cm/20 inch combined mode so I don’t care.

Picked up the non-redeco wave 2 Hot Wheels guys to check out. Segundo and Scorcher are decently competent car-bots that remind me a lof of older lines, somewhere between Cybertron and '07 I think. Albeit, at prices that would have gotten me three toys of slightly larger size each back in that era!

What really struck me once I got the lads in hand, though, is how much I actually miss the figures being packed in alt mode. I know why the mainline packaging has moved to boxes over bubble cards, that's been argued to death, but....bah, I dunno. As someone who enjoys the fiddle factor and puzzling out transformations without looking at the instructions, there's just something more satisfying about that first vehicle-to-robot conversion.

I'm convinced they just pack them in robot mode because alt-modes are generally more compact and the boxes nowadays look hella empty as is.

even aside the puzzle stuff it's just more fun to take a car or truck or munky or whatever and turn it into a robot for the first time than it is to take a robot and turn it into a vehicle tbh

As somebody who doesn't use instructions, I think it'll help people get the hang of transformation better as well since generally, going to altmode is the harder direction.
