So WotC pretty much revealed their plans for up until the 1st quarter of 2026 for Magic at GenCon, and I’m not really enthused at all. The “Universes Beyond” products are hyping me more than any of the normal sets they talked about. And even then it’s feeling so much more like they are pushing out to much a year to keep up with. Lord knows there are quite a few sets I feel I can skip. Both Remastered sets for Ravnica next year and Innistrad the year after are easy passes for me.

But outside the Caverns of Ixalan with the Jurassic World sun set, and a year later with the Bloomburrow anthropomorphic animal set, I’m not really seeing much to grab my attention.

I know Drizzt is more of a D&D property than a MtG property, but my other Drizzt pictures were put here because they included MtG cards...so I'm kinda stuck.

Anyway, I found this at GameStop today...

He doesn't stand so well on his own, so I had to us a couple books to prop him up. But he looks fantastic. The cloak is removable. I'm not sure what the green thing is, but the blue thing is an effect that be put on one of the swords (more intentioned for Icing Death I would assume). The swords look great and fit in the scabbards snuggly, though I prefer to display him dual-wielding them in normal badass fahion.

Could be. It's as good a guess as anything. The box doesn't say, so I'll go with that.

Wow this thread has been quite a while. Considering the course the game has taken lately I can understand a lot not being hot with the state of the game in recent days. That said I still love the game overall enough despite all the crap WotC is throwing out.

A bright light in this though is the latest Foundations set. Pretty much a core set in the vein of past ones. Unlike the more recent core sets this one is sticking around for some time. Foundations is said to be Standard legal for 5 years. And with the mix of old and new, it feels like one of the best core experiences we’ve had in a long time. Had a fun time in the latest prerelease tournament. That might be thanks to my crazy lucky pulls though.

But here’s where the screw kinda comes in. The Main set is like I said standard legal, but Foundations also includes a separate Jumpstart set and other products that print cards from outside the main set that won’t be legal in Standard. That said there is still a lot of fun in these if you don’t care about tournament legality.

So standard and Foundations aside, year in review overall M:tG has been really messed up in more ways than one. I really have disliked the theme of most of the sets this year. Murders in Karlov Manor I skipped out on since it just didn’t feel like heading back to Ravnica to play Clue, which they didn’t hide with a separate Clue card set to buy.

Kind of the same feeling with Outlaws of Thunder Junction. The western train heist set feels out of place to me and they brought Jace back from the dead so lore wise I was dead to this set. I at least picked up a couple boosters of Karlov Manor. I don’t think I touched Outlaws.

Not a Fallout fan myself so I didn’t go after any of the commander decks. They look cool though.

Bloombarrow was my favorite flavor of the year with the Redwall like anthropomorphic animal theme. It was all adorable art and loved the idea of it. Gameplay though was a bit mid though.

Duskmorn,…… absolutely despise the modern horror slasher movie theming of the set and would have skipped the set completely had it not for seeing off my nephew to college at the local prerelease tournament. And as much as I hate the lore and theme, the gameplay was fun as heck. The Room Enchantment mechanics were a good value per card with being able to play one half the card first and unlocking the other side at sorcery speed anytime later.

Secret Lair releases though have been the usual mix of interesting reprints in alt art, new cards in other franchises and more. For the most part I‘ve been lucky enough to get the ones I’ve wanted, but it’s been a pain since they switched back to limited runs over print to order. You have to get in as soon as it opens and grab what you want. And even then it’s no guarantee that you will get everything with their stupid queue system. I got in 30 seconds in after the latest Marvel cards went live and still didn’t get the Avengers skinned Arcane Signet after waiting 2 and a half hours to even pay for the sets. Both Marvel and the Monty Python cards were horrible customer experiences. But WotC sees the positive that they sold it all in record times so whether we see a change back is probably not happening.

And the future of the game is looking a bit bleak for lore people like me. The next set is a Magic version of Wacky Races/Cannonball Run or other crazy battle race themes. I’m cautious to jump into the vehicle heavy set. We do get a return to Tarkir with the Dragonstorm set. I can see that as a lore positive. Our only other Magic lore set is going to be Edge of Eternities which is set up as their Space Opera set…. a Star Wars like set since they probably can’t do SW since it has it’s own card game going again.

But then we get the Universes Beyond sets of other Franchises getting full Magic expansions. The two of the three named are the Final Fantasy set, taking inspiration from the entire FF franchise, and a Spider-Man set we don’t know too much about how far it will reach into his lore and characters yet. The big thing now though is unlike the Assassin’s Creed or LotR sets, these will be Standard legal sets. And that’s a big tipping point in some circles. I’m mixed since it’s not like I never took a card creation program to make other franchises into Magic Cards and I’m hyped to see the FF and S-M sets as a fully developed reality, but it’s diluted the lore of the games own canon within the game once we make these tournament legal.

Anyway long post aside if you got through my long winded thoughts on the game, here’s a link to get a “free” Welcome Deck. Don’t know if it’s something you got to find a store for, or if there’s shipping involved or not. You get a deck worth of cards with one 30 card half the color of choice of the box with another random color comprising the other half of 30 cards.

Oh and my Foundation lucky as hell pulls from the Prerelease. A Borderless of the new Eldrazi in the set, a copy of Doubling Season, and my foil stamped promo of the new Chandra planeswalker card. And the combo of all three can be devastating if I get all three out!

Wow near a year later And I'm posting... Well in the mean time we went back to Tarkir, had a massive win in Final Fantasy, went space opera in Edge of Eternities, and .... went Spider-Verse in the Spider-man set released today. Honestly the weirdness of the sets going in between in universe Magic sets and outside IP is very mixed. But we still got Avatar the Last Airbender in November to go this year.

But Magiccon Atlanta dropped most of what we are expecting for next years sets.

We already knew "Lorwyn Eclipsed" was coming in January. I was out of the game during the first time through Lorwyn/Shadowmoor but I'm kinda eager to go back to the more Fae like plane and it's light and dark themes.

Surprisingly the second set of the year is the one we weren't getting any info on other than it's another IP and it's due in March. The reveal for it is coming at NYCC in a few weeks. Rumor is though it could be a TMNT set.

Set three in the end of April is "Secrets of Strixhaven". The return to Magics version of Hogwarts has some of the original characters from the previous set in their post academia life, while following some new students who come from other Planes thanks to the opening of the Omenpaths.

Set Four in June is bouncing back to "Marvel Super Heroes" Opening the gates wide to Marvel beyond Spider-Man. Potentially some of the cards could be reprints of the previous Secret Lairs. But we saw Avengers, The Fantastic Four, and the Heroes for Hire involved.

Set Five gives us the bounce back to Middle Earth just like the New Line Movies with "The Hobbit" set in August.

Set Six goes back to Magics own story in supposedly the big story tentpole end "Reality Fracture"..... And I honestly feel nothing is really felt like the story has led up to much here. Magics story team feels like it's been coasting the last few years and the other IP's taking over half the sets has taken the wind out of following it. Sadly the name is all we have for the set yet.

And for set SEVEN for 2026 we Boldly Go into more outside IP with Star Trek.... Is it weird remembering when Trek had it's own TCG in the 90's.

I'm really torn over the overuse of outside IP. It's not like I didn't make fan cards of other IP's back in the day and honestly it's been fun with some of them in the translation. D&D, LotR, and Final Fantasy were not too far outside the realm of Magics wheelhouse that they felt like they mostly fit in the game with little issue. I haven't been against the weirdness of some of the others either and have a box of Spider-man cards now. But to have the majority of the sets of a year taken up by other IP feels really bad. Like I said it feels like the Magic story team has gotten the back seat and pushing the number of Standard legal sets to another seven next year is crazy, And they extended how many sets stay in rotation recently. The problem is it's making WotC/Hasbro a ton of money as both LotR and now Final Fantasy made crazy amounts of money. And that's not even counting the Secret Lair drops which is another money making problem in itself. As cool as I see some of the stuff they are doing it's also sickening seeing the game become Fortnite in card form....especially since they already did Fortnite cards.

Yeah.... the FF cards sucked TMM and I back in. It's not really worth it to us to keep up with the main sets, though. They just churn them out faster and faster.
