I don't disagree with the principle of representing the views being argued against accurately, but to say that arguing against a steelman doesn't refute the actual views is silly.

If he doesn't even give any (pseudo-)medical reason at all, then he spared from being a "hypocrite" only by the fact that he doesn't even have a pretense of not being a bigot.

I think some of us are too laser-focused on the idea of hypocrisy being the ultimate "gotcha" and forget that it doesn't equate 1:1 to a person being wrong. It can be useful as a rhetorical device in an open debate, but it's pretty useless in discussions with people who already agree with our positions on the issues.

Sad news from the UK...

(It also states that, due to the law, trans females will no longer be able to join the Women's Institute nor the Girl Guides.)
I’m utterly disgusted at what the Labour Party has become. The party of LGBTQ rights is more regressive than the last Tory government(s).

Free Speech Union hacked by trans activists, exposing donors funding anti-Trans cases.

UK trans activist group Bash Back has released leaked donor data from the Free Speech Union, revealing financial backing for legal campaigns tied to prominent anti-trans figures. The disclosures include large contributions from wealthy individuals and public personalities, prompting debate over transparency, privacy, and the role of money in amplifying anti-trans rhetoric. The Free Speech Union has not publicly responded to the leak.

The Free Speech Union was founded in 2020 by Toby Young and describes its mission as defending freedom of expression for individuals who face professional or legal consequences over controversial speech. Critics have long argued that the group disproportionately focuses on defending gender-critical and anti-trans voices...

...They also immediately worked with the tories (and anti-trans crackpot then-tory MP miriam cates) who set up a “freedom of speech” department in the office for students. The FSU’s media manager (arif ahmed, a jordan peterson fanatic and part of the peter “thiel network”) was given the head role and his first act was fining sussex university for having an anti-bullying policy against transphobia. He said that it was unthinkable that a university would prevent transphobia on campus and ask staff to use trans students’ names.

They came to the conclusion by looking at the policy and interviewing notorious transphobe kathleen stock, who left sussex uni on her own accord after being called out for her bigotry, to sell books and go on the terf podcast/conference circuit. They didn’t interview or consult sussex uni or any members of staff, just stock. They’ve since warned universities around the country that they should allow transphobia on campus and remove protections for trans and other marginalised groups, redefining anti-radicalisation and anti-bullying policies, as students “should be exposed to other points of view” like targeted bigotry from staff and other students..."

Good to hear. More proof that society as whole doesn't hate us and it's mostly the loud windbags who want us removed from society.
I agree. I can appreciate that there may be some level of nuance and also that possibly my own entitlement as a cis male might make it easier for me to support such things over cis females (for reasons some feminists have put forward) but I still, regardless of that, am glad that anyone can use those pools.

A Republican legislator from Nebraska is planning on blocking the bathroom bill that will be coming up to a vote there. Assuming he sticks to his guns, this is GOOD NEWS!!!

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.
Citizen
But it's also nebraska: why would there be a democrat to block it?

Either way good news!

To be fair, Nebraska is just a slightly more blue Kansas with a saner way of distributing electoral college votes than almost every other state in the nation.

Isn't kansas the US capital for meth production and consumption?

Not sure about production, but it's not even in the top 10 per capita for use. According to https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/meth-use-by-state the rankings are lead by West Virginia and New Mexico. Kansas is ranked right below Nebraska down in the second half of the list. Really wish West Virginia would get their act together. It's a beautiful state but has been marred by poor leadership for so long it hurts.

OK, New Mexico and meth: Was Breaking Bad a reflection real life, or has real life come to reflect Breaking Bad?

I think the setting of New Mexico was intentional. There's been a meth issue in that state for over 20 years.

A German activist has been sentenced to eight years in a Hungarian prison for assaulting right-wing extremists and for being a member of an extreme left-wing group.

The 25-year-old, identified only as Maja T., was found guilty of involvement in violent assaults by the group Antifa Ost in the lead-up to an annual commemoration of Nazi soldiers in Budapest.

But supporters have raised concerns over whether Maja T., who identifies as non-binary, could receive a fair trial in the Hungarian court, because the country legally recognises only two genders and Pride marches are banned...

"Sexually explicit queer romance novels about hockey players" is usually the degree of specificity that you have to go to Amazon's self-published section to find.
