You see, I thought Captain Marvel used to be his name in a very "MY NAME IS NOT SHAZAM, DAMMIT" type way but then because of things being the way they are between Marvel and DC and Marvel having Carol Danvers, DC was...compelled...to go with Shazam.

I could be wrong though. I haven't been paying that close enough of attention to the industry for a while now.

And going way back to the Silver Age, the original Marvel Captain Marvel was a Kree whose name was 'Mar-Vell', a character who was created entirely so that Marvel Comics could trademark the name after the original trademark had lapsed due to, ironically enough, a lawsuit from DC which alleged that Fawcett Comics' Captain Marvel (Shazam) was a ripoff of Superman, which led to the cancellation of all of Fawcett's superhero comics.

After a couple of decades, DC licensed the original Captain Marvel from Fawcett and folded him into the DC universe, but due to the aforementioned trademark shenanigans they can only market him under the name Shazam.
