So will this effectively be a tax on the US's own oil imports, or does it only apply to other countries?

Trump gets 20% off the top.

I’d be very interested to see the muted response to this toll compared to the Iranian one. BOTH are wholly illegal but I have a hunch you aren’t going to have the whole world lining up to condemn the US doing it…even though they should complain because it’s bullshit.

There was a negative response from "the whole world" toward Iran for blockading the Strait? I would have expected almost every country to direct their ire towards the US since the whole thing was our fault. Well, ire from the countries whose own imports were jeopardized by the blockade, and just mockery from the rest.

I wasn't even aware the Jones Act was a thing before this article. (FYI, it's basically a 100-year-old law requiring domestic cargo to go on US crewed and operated ships except in national emergency.) Putting it here as this is supposedly caused by the Hormuz thing(which looks to just be an excuse, based on their research)

The top official in the Zohran Mamdani administration’s Office for International Affairs made plans to meet with Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations.

Commissioner Ana María Archila was scheduled to meet with Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, at 2 United Nations Plaza, alongside two other senior officials in the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs on July 7 at 11 a.m.—this according to screenshots of a calendar invitation reviewed by City Journal and confirmed by a source connected to the international affairs community and another familiar with Archila’s office. Another official within the State Department also confirmed awareness of the Mamdani administration’s impending engagement.

The meeting between Archila and Iravani was called off after the State Department—which was not informed ahead of time—met with the Mamdani administration to clarify acceptable conduct, according to the State Department official. City Journal learned that Commissioner Archila allegedly did not inform Mayor Mamdani of the meeting; she was reprimanded for the move and directed to cancel the meeting according to the source familiar with the office.

“This meeting did not and will not take place,” a spokesperson with the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs said in a statement.

Iran killed 40,000 people in one month, is currently sanctioned by and at war with America, and Mamdani's team wanted to try to build their own foreign policy with it.

You know, my main rebuttal to complaints about Mamdani's views on the Middle East was, who the hell cares, he's running for mayor of New York, not the president of the whole-ass country, anything related to this issue is way outside his jurisdiction.

That is, however, contingent on him knowing that.

Feels like small potatoes when the Houthis attacked two Saudi tankers to try and close off a shipping route and Iran rejected a hand delivered ceasefire proposal from the Iraqi Prime Minister. Kind of wondering how soon Trump capitulates again, this time with an even bigger reconstruction fund.

But since it was brought up, reading some of the articles it's kind of weird how the Madmani admin's response is just we don't know what she was doing. No actual explanation or accountability for trying to foster relations with a bloody theocracy. Just whoops, she's new here, now about those ice cream regulations...

So they're claiming the ceasefire let them restart the clock on how long they can do things without congressional auth.

One other thing that jumped out at me, unrelated to the Iran aspects, is the 2002 authorization of force against Iraq post-9/11 was only repealed this past December?

Legislative housekeeping always takes a back seat to pressing issues. It's honestly a wonder that they find time to get around to it at all, most of the time.

Not directly Iran related, but in reaction to all that:

No paywall: https://archive.is/04cdu

Some points and speculation I saw related to this:
  • Greece and even more India won't like it
  • This new alliance has nuclear weapons
  • I don't think this club will be a fan of Israel
  • They will try to collect more members among the Sunni Islam countries
  • Turkey is a rising weapon manufacturer, what will happen if they get backed by Saudi money?
