While we're at it, let's eliminate gender divisions in chess. I can't think of a single compelling reason for them to exist in a game that requires no physical prowess at all.

It's because sexist men wanted to make it impossible for a man to ever be beaten by a woman (which would happen regularly in many sports, and literally more often than the reverse in tennis).
Heck, that's exactly why shooting competitions went from mixed to gendered. Women were competitive, often getting close to or even beating men and so slowly they started splitting them up into gendered categories. This is just within the last 40 to 50 years too. Skeet shooting didn't become gendered until 1992.

And Newsom's second guest is...

Michael F-ing Savage

Who's next, Milo Yiannopoulos?

I'm no longer giving him the benefit of the doubt.

You want to position yourself more centrist? Reach across the aisle? That DOES NOT require sitting down and normalizing bigots known for saying some of the most hateful, vile jive. Michael Savage was fired from MSNBC for going on a hate-filled homophobic rant on air. He's been decried by the SPLC and many more organizations for express white supremacy and anti-Semitism.

I hope to Hell and back we assure he's not the 2028 nominee.

I don’t like it either, but I think Newsom knows how much podcasts and right-wing media shaped the 2024 election, and he wants to get in front of that audience.

People said Hasan Piker could be the left’s Joe Rogan, but he doesn’t want to do it. Maybe Newsom sees an opportunity to change some minds, but that’s not going to happen by preaching to the choir.

Or maybe he's just moving right. That could be pragmatism, chasing the voter - but I'm not voting for it.

People like Savage actively push rhetoric that will get me and my community killed.

I don't have the luxury of wish casting that Newsom is just playing an angle.

If I have to choose between letting the world burn and throwing one marginalized group under the bus to stop it from burning... gonna be honest, the burning is looking pretty tempting. Especially since "stop it from burning" has proven time and time again to be only temporary anyway before the fascists manage to take over again and release the brake.

Call me an accelerationist if you want, but I'm getting pretty damn sick of the cycle.

That only works if you assume they won't immediately swivel to targeting another group after the last one burns. And then another group. And then another. Ask 1930s Germany how that worked out.

I wrote this poem back in September in the run-up to the election. It feels prescient.

Fascism is the beast that eats
It needs a platter for it's feasts

And as we claim we do not see
"It's better them, than you or me!"

For once it feeds on all it can
It turns it's head and starts to plan

And the actual progressive left is no better, having thrown their lot in with those who want Israel wiped off the map, with a not-so-secret goal of targeting all Jews worldwide next. When the only representatives of "tolerance" are people who still have one specific marginalized group they're either willing to throw under the bus, or are actively plotting to throw under the bus, "let the whole world burn" becomes even more appealing because frankly, maybe we as a species deserve it.

Beyond all that, even if he really is just trying to center himself for the presidential election - he has to win the DEMOCRATIC primary first.

He's put the wagon before the horse.

If that NYT/Ipsos poll is accurate, a majority (67%) of Democrats actually agree with him on the women's sports issue.

Scum or not, this clearly isn’t going to stop him from winning the nomination.

I actually prefer Tim Walz, to be clear, but I’d take either of them over a JD Vance presidency any day.

It's not just Newsome.

anyone who refuses to speak up for trans rights is signaling they won't hesitate to throw whatever minority necessary into the meat grinder so long as it fuels their preferred type of passive profitable fascism.

Keating makes the classic mistake of expecting decency from a Republican but ultimately he stood up for McBride when it mattered.

Senate Democrats are risking a shutdown protesting DOGE. Their heart is in the right place, but not their brains. I am guessing they will pass it in time and are just hitting the brakes so they can talk about it, but it does ring pretty true when Mike Johnson steps to the camera and says these same Democrats berated Republicans last year for risking a shutdown. (The reverse is true too, of course!)

They always talk about who will get blamed for a shutdown and I am rarely confident what the public will say. But if the Democrats think Trump is afraid to risk a shutdown, they need to think again. He's doing a shutdown whether they cooperate or not.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.
Citizen
Even if the democrats simply don't participate: it's going to shut down anyway. Republicans can't agree on what goes into the continuing resolution, and it's dividing the vote internally. They need democrats to vote for it to pass it.

No matter what happens: A horrific continuing resolution (not even a budget, a CR.) is going to pass eventually, and americans will learn which democrats absolutely need to be primaried.

A shutdown might actually be best case, because if operations are paused, DOGE can't wreck things further, and ti gives the courts time to do their thing. (And even under shutdown, essential services will continue to work IIRC). Especially considering R Congresscritters are trying to sneak things in like abrogating their oversight over tarriffs.
