From Nune at TFW2005, we have our first look at Wave 2 of Studio Series '86 figures. Featured in this wave are:

Kranix, the Lithonian who famously slipped away from Unicron only to be devoured by Sharkticons on Quintessa:

He converts from Lithonian Scientist to the spaceship mode previously only seen in the Marvel comics.

Astrotrain, a brand new take on the character that converts between robot, space shuttle and train mode. It has yet to be revealed if Studio Series Devastator can be assembled inside of him in shuttle mode.

Shockwave, which appears to be a remold of the previous Siege version of the character without the additional armor/parts.

Skywarp, adding to the SS'86 Seeker group

And finally Sunstreaker and Wheeljack who appear to be rereleases of the Earthrise versions of the molds.

Kranix existing is crazy. Kranix turning out this good? Now that’s impressive. New Astrotrain makes me glad I only ever got the Galaxy Shuttle version of the Stege mold. Skywarp is a must buy for me. I have Thundercracker on the way soon. So I need the Seekers.

I may get Shockwave, somi have a toon version to go alongside my Comic version. But man, I’m kinda sad that this is just the Stege version again. “Spaceship” mode and all.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

So... were lithonians meant to be a transforming species? I know the UK comics went that way, but was that always supposed to be the case?

It wouldn’t surprise me, since they tried to escape in ships, rather than turning into ships.

The one revealed in the same picture drop, it looks quite nice but I'm hoping it's not one of those 'Lithium pack you can't replace' things.

Edit: Looks like USB. Oh, well...

This wave may be kinda boring (aside from Kranix), but I think that's entirely due to how spoiled we are. Ten years ago every of these releases would have been a show stopper.
This is our third Astrotrain mold in what, ten years?

Astrotrain. Not a core castmember or something. Yes, he's not some nobody, but triple-changing is complex, and scale-wise, he needs a larger size class (which there are relatively fewer of and lots of competition).

I need to dig out TR and Stege Astrotrain so I can get some nice side-by-side images. (My Classics and G1 Astrotrains are even less accessible now, plus the size discrepancy makes things tricky.)

Yeah, they're only unreplaceable if you're a coward.

But seriously: it's just a little soldering and probably some hex nut screws. Nothing impossible to overcome. Depending on how much space is actually IN the matrix, you could probably shove some pretty interesting things in there. Maybe even side load some extra stuff onto the computer once it's open.

I'm more intrigued by Astrotrain the longer I look at it. We can see where his chest goes in train mode. That is not where Astrotrain's chest normally goes. They have totally rethought how this guy works.

Overall, I am not liking how the bot mode looks compared to the Siege version which looks a lot more like the Cartoon model shown above. Especially in the chest.

I still plan on getting this version though.

Properly transformed picture from the Apology Tour reel:

Low res, but you can see how the chest is supposed to look
