Even a disaster as spectacular as Exxon Valdez barely made a dent in the long-term trend, because once environmentalism became an unmanly thing, it was guaranteed that all of the insecure males would mock and reject it out of hand, and insecure males are a powerful voting bloc.
Worse yet, this became a self-sustaining phenomenon. Since men were far more likely to reject environmentalism, environmental groups tend to be more dominated by women, which only reinforces the impression that environmentalism is unmanly.
