Rodimus Prime finally gets a vehicle mode that isn't designed around Hot Rod's vehicle mode, and it's this non-transforming chibi thing.

Someone had to do it though. Let this become the norm again.

But I'm with you on wanting a non-Hot Rod take for a Rodimus Prime altmode, especially for the car/cab. I'd actually like to see a Rodimus Prime car/cab that keeps the G1 front -- shortened hood and cockpit, spoiler starting basically right after the cockpit -- but has for the back half a long, flat rectangular box that's the same height.

As someone who grew up with the original Rodimus Prime, I want the front to be able to work independently of the trailer. And if that means having a trucked-up version of Hot Rod's alt, then I'll take it.

Absolutely. I do allude to the Titanium's leg transformation in my idea above. And for all its flaws this was at the time a very welcome design experiment, in my mind.

Let's keep doing this (Rodimus having his own non-Hot Rod Plus transformation) again so that we can eventually reach something that works the way we want it to. Make it exist now, work to make it good next.

I quite liked Energon Rodimus' design in theory and thought it worked well as an upgrade. Like... what if Rodimus really got the "Prime" treatment and got to be a pretty cool truck?

The design was compromised on a few fronts but I feel like there's a lot of space to play with the idea and do it justice today.

It was also basically just a modified version of G2 Hero Optimus Prime's transformation.

Yeah, "he's similar to Combat Hero OP" is just all the more reason to make a new mold (the Volvo OP comes close) now that can be pretooled as one or the other, as is the current practice with molds anyway. Sacrifice the powerlinking, make it pre-Spark of Combination Rodimus, whatever. Tooling for two heads and chestplates (Rodimus can get away with the side-ab tires; CHOP can get away with the boosters, or make them 5mm guns). Could come with a version of CHOP's air-launch rocket/s (and stickers to relabel him Sureshot), or Rodimus' Galvatron-esque cannon and symbol flag. There are even redecos for either built in, in blue CHOP and Checkpoint.

Funny - the "I want Rodimus w/out it being Hot Rod" point-of-view is like "I want an Ultra Magnus with an independent white Prime cab." Same discussion, different color scheme.

And they're both things I want, heh. No 3P company has really bothered with a cab Magnus for SS86, though (it seems workable, but mine's been in storage forever so I could be misremembering) so maybe that ship has sailed.

If SS86 Magnus gets a Retro release, maybe DNA will get on that.
Last word about the Retro line from Evan was that they're focusing on Mini-Bots because they're the only figures small enough to fit inside specially designed packaging for the line.

The US Blokees importer is teasing that Devastator will be available at an upcoming con, so they at least have some access to the combiner kibble set. They didn't see if it'd be available online in general afterwards, though, or if the kibble box would be available separately.
