Milton hasn't even hit, but the southern side of the state is now experiencing a rare tornado outbreak.

wonko the sane?

You may test that assumption at your convinience.

I normally say stuff like this in jest, but.... damn. Did you all piss off god or something?

They came for the hurricane, but are keeping busy with all the tornados. This is a live stream from Max Velocity, covering the tornado(!) threat through central/eastern Florida, before landfall of a category 4/3 hurricane later tonight. At the time I'm posting this, there are 13(!) active tornado warnings through Florida

I'm getting some wind but not as bad as Helene so far.

Watching the footage now, it all looks horrifying. A travelling band called The Bergomot did a mini doc about their attempts to escape Helene, watching it rn on youtube. Seems pretty harrowing. My heart goes out to everyone in the region.

All good down here.

I shouldn't have worried. I shouldn't have lost power from this one. But I shouldn't have lost power from Helene either, yet I did.

My folks in Bradenton had some property damage, but everyone is ok. The house is overall ok; they just won't be able to use their back porch until repairs are made.

Thankfully most of.my local friends avoided even losing power. And the one that did, got it back in less than 24 hours. Nothing major to report as far as properry damage too.

For context for international members:
Erin is the newest tropical event in the Atlantic, the first full hurricane of the 2025 season. Through Saturday, Erin roared from developing into a tropical storm into a category 5 hurricane in a matter of hours (one of the fastest developments on record, one of only a half dozen storms to exceed 145 MPH wind speed). The storm is currently in a eyewall replacement phase as a category 3, and is NOT expected (at this time) to hit the Eastern US.
However, eyewall replacement phase typically results in a widening of the storm, so coastal regions are expected to be hit with aggressive waves, surf, and rip currents in the coming days.

Given how this storm has bucked trends, Fnu is right to be worried about impacts later in the week, thought I think the greatest concern will be the Carolina coasts given current trends, but nothing is set in stone.

This isn't my first rodeo. I'm not going to trust that this storm is turning away until I can see it turning away. I know forecasters aren't just making jive up. The steering mechanisms are real. But intensity is a factor in how much the steering mechanisms matter. At some point these storms kinda shrug it off and do what they want.

Yeah, I wouldn’t take chances either. I mean, NOBODY seemed to expect Erin to go from a little tropical storm in the Atlantic to blowing up to one of the strongest hurricanes on record in a matter of hours. Between escalating effects from climate change and the current administration’s anI-science efforts…the ability to forecast this stuff just seems to be regressing in some respects.

We're caught in a paradox. Hurricane tracking needs more research, and that needs more funding. But if forecasters get it wrong, there is a spiteful gut reaction that says "Defund these clowns."

If this storm doesn't turn away, those calls will be deafening. The models were in as good agreement as I have ever seen them. This wasn't the familiar mess of spaghetti. They were very confident in this turn. And it still should. It absolutely still should. There is still time. But man, the cone just keeps nudging west with every update.
