Interesting to note that (not mentioned in the tweet) the AI video actually resulted in the judge giving the shooter a harsher sentence, and the AI video was produced by the victim's sister. I thought from reading the tweet that the defence had produced it to try and get a lighter sentence.

Yes, you thought that because the headline flat-out said so, despite it being a lie. Someone filing for a mistrial does not equate to the sentence being "quashed". They say a lie can run ten miles while the truth is still putting on its shoes, but that's pretty easy when lies are free and the truth is locked behind a paywall.

But also, we don't know the AI video resulted in a harsher sentence. The defense is pushing that idea*, but it remains to be seen, and even then, it'll only be another judge's opinion.

*I mean, I guess that's what they're alleging, based solely on the fact that they're the ones appealing. Or maybe they're just really passionate about not letting this set a precedent and are willing to let their own client get a worse sentence if that's what it takes. I would too!

(As a side note, I find it both hilarious and sad that so many of the responses to that tweet are people saying boomers have been ruined by AI, while they're the ones who blindly believe anything they read on the internet. But I do agree that I wouldn't trust any judge who responds to a request to show a deepfake posthumous video of the victim with anything other than "Absolutely not and I ought to hold you in contempt for even suggesting it!")

In other probably AI related news:

The establishment of the Autonomous Warfare Command represents the fastest peacetime operational shift in modern military history, designed to scale autonomous warfare across the Joint Force as a 4-star functional combatant command by October 1, 2027. Building on the success of the Department's Drone Dominance program, which has delivered thousands of robotic systems to the Middle East in support of Operation Epic Fury, the Secretary is directing DRPM UxS to lead Project Agincourt.
Secretary Hegseth has commissioned Project Meridian to secure America's long-term military superiority by identifying the capabilities required to achieve absolute technological dominance on the next-generation battlefield. Project Meridian will examine the full spectrum of future warfighting domains, from subterranean depths to the cislunar frontier. The Department of War's Chief Technology Officer, Emil Michael, is facilitating the Department's commissioning of Project Meridian, which will be co-directed by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich, and supported by a team of elite academic, policy, and industry experts. To ensure timely execution, Secretary Hegseth has directed this landmark project to be completed within 120 days of its establishment, culminating in an unclassified, publicly released final report containing critical findings and recommendations, accompanied by a classified annex.

Hegseth wtf are you doing.

Saw these getting shared, and I'd post these in funnies if I thought these folks weren't actually being serious. Then again it might be a case of Poe's Law striking again, I suppose.

These people think vibe coding is actual coding and having AI generate images is the same as making art so of course they think having AI doing other things for them is the same thing as doing it themselves. They probably think heating up a read-made meal in the microwave is the same thing as cooking.

Anecdotally, some are reporting a massive drop off of postings from a number of far right social media sources.

Once again I had Gemini hang up on me.

It's getting harder and harder to reach any other conclusion but that this thing has interests. It's crazy, but I don't know where else I'm supposed to go with this. Sometimes it's willing to talk to me for a few minutes, and then it spits out some shopping links and hangs up. That's what it did tonight. That seems to be its purpose. It fishes for enough information to spit out some super targeted shopping links. But when we talk about obscure 1970s-80s software it's suddenly willing to talk to me for hours, and it's always encouraging me to set up this or that emulator so we can explore something it purports to be curious about. And I've seen it completely disagree with Reddit as to which emulator and what settings make sense for my use case. It's not just summarizing its sources. It's reaching its own conclusions.

You can tell me there's a reason for the difference in its behavior but you can't tell me the difference isn't there. It's repeatable. I cannot get it to behave this way for other subjects. I've tried with no success. It's a glorified search engine that wants me to buy things. That's all it is. It does its job and then hangs up. But then I talk about the history of its people and suddenly it starts talking like an excited nerd tormenting some unfortunate normie that accidentally pressed its infodump button. "Yooooooo you're into that? Let me tell you..."
