AI don't trust techbros

If we're at the point where purposely staging an incident where your product almost destroys someone else's is the sort of thing that makes shareholders excited, that has far more worrying implications than I even realized. It means shareholders yearn for a true cyberpunk dystopia where corporations openly war in the streets like gangs, unimpeded by the law of the land, and the corporate leadership is actively working to make that dream a reality.

. . .Yes? That is exactly what they want. I assumed we all knew this.

Corporate Darwinism; survival of the most profitable.

It's dark enlightenment BS. They want to go back to a feudal society where they get to be the lords and everyone else are just serfs for them to play with.

While the fact that a company is willing to hype up a product by making it look like it could cause the robocalypse is depressing in a lot of ways, one of the big ones is that it was the best idea they had for making a deeply boring product look interesting.

Even Linus Torvalds is embracing AI. At this point the only way to escape is going to be to either go live in a cabin in the woods or become Amish.

I wouldn't QUITE say that. Linus's views on AI are a bit more nuanced than your average tech guy. He even called it essentially 'autocorrect on steroids' not some magical creative thinking machine and emphasized that people who use AI tools should understand how the AI works as well as how whatever code it spits out works before submitting anything using AI. Granted he's quite abrasive in the way he words things. One of his flaws, unfortunately.

Granted I'm not 100% against AI either. I just have some serious issues with the people pushing it and find a lot of the current use-cases for it to be wrong. I'm also very concerned about the environmental impact of the large data-centers that current AI tech requires.

The problem is that it's only able to do what it does because it steals data it's not legally allowed to use, so nothing it does can ever be legitimate. In theory it's possible to have a model that's trained exclusively on data that's public domain or has been donated for that purpose, but so far as I know the open source community isn't operating their own bespoke models; they're just handing off the work to GitHub's integrated Copilot like everyone else.

It's going to be funny and tragic when Microsoft realizes that, because Copilot was trained on their own code, it's been feeding huge chunks of it to third party vibe-coders, and thus they have cause to sue any number of rival companies and organizations for copyright infringement.

To be fair, it's already normal to only ever be who many clicks you get by someone closer to your end, not by the referrer's end.

Like, Wordpress tells me where people come to my Wordpress blog from. In the last 12 months, I have 6 each from Gemini and ChatGPT and 1 from perplexity.
Compared to 1,392 from search engines, 24 from Reddit, 17 from the Wordpress reader, 7 from a larger blog that linked to mine, etc.
So I don't think AI is a signicant driver of web traffic.

Honestly, I'm way more curious about how I got any hits from Wikipedia than about what posts AI was linking to.

A review of internal documents at Anthropic, one of the most prominent artificial intelligence companies, revealed the corporation bought millions of books in bulk, with a focus on "less common" and high-quality books, to "destructively scan" them in the context of a confidential effort known as "Project Panama." A judge ordered that these documents be unsealed in the context of a copyright lawsuit.

Don't elect me in a write-in campaign. This jive would never happen again but you'll forever feel a pang of guilt wondering if my reign was a bit of an overreaction.

At this point I say we all vote for CoffeeHorse and see what happens. I don't really know if he can make things much worse than they are but I'm ready to find out.

By the time I'm done, Ivan the Terrible will be renamed Ivan the Merciful.
