G1 tends to be a mix of "DnD with Ponies" and psudeo Slice of Life stuff, but with fantasy elements. FIM is basically what you get when you combine both G1 and Tales, but treat the audience as people.
Edit:
Becuse my autistic mind want let it go I am expanding my thoughts. IMO there is really...
Oh there have always been male ponies. G1 has a whole arc or two with the "Big Brother Ponies" who are all, iirc, Clydesdale-ish kinda like Big Mac. Also you are either like or hate Teddy. There tends to be no inbetween.
Tales is kinda the proto-type of FIM in a way, since its completely SOL style. It does take away the fantasy and adventure elements. Its not bad, But its very much a product of its time and is very much the "girls show" type cartoon where it acts like girls only like the most feminine of things.
So I know we are getting a decently remolded Mirage in the 3 pk... but I kinda want them to do a new Mirage that actually looks like the G1 Toy/Animation model becuase the current Mirage just looks out of place next to all the others that look like they stepped out of the cartoon.
Also...
I don't think those are wings. Notice how he doesn't have the tail rotor? If this was the toy, those would be his arms, that become the tail rotor. For some reason they are seperated and then simplified.
As I was explaining to some casual fans, as someone that has read both TWD and Invincible comics; Kirkman is very much a slow boil author. He's not really "writing for trades" but he prefers the forests over the trees. He gets and idea and he runs with it, and there's no telling quite how long...
Its not just for Turbo. Power Rangers in Space was meant to be more of a space opera.... till they realized Decaranger does almost no space stuff. Timeforce was meant to be more of a Time Travel series... untile Time Ranger was set almost entirely in one time era. RPM had some grand ideas, until...
My theory on Turbo is very simple: Doug Sloan (the EP since the start) was burned out with Turbo. That's why it feels like its going through the motions until he steps down and Judd Lynn takes over. Just about ever series Lynn touchs turns to gold.
