Also, the toy versions are a bit longer, and as such arguably more unwieldy than the animation models, so keeping them that way when not in use probably made sense at the time.

I dunno, I kinda like the sense of legacy it gives the franchise, much like in Japan. Or with Star Trek, where basically that role belongs to them.
...with the odd and more recent exceptions of movie reboots, of course.
I'm always down for more G1 Steeljaw.
Something I wanted to make, but never got around to, was a Beast Wars version that was like the Maximal counterpart of Ravage.
