IDW was also nice for utilizing characters from all eras, not just G1. Tankor and Tall Tankor being two buds who happen to have the same name being my favorite example.

I really liked Furman's original take on things; given him free reign to reimagine the Transformers universe, without having to worry about what toys were on the shelves or be beholden to a then twenty year old treatment, he turned the entire concept of the Transformers on earth onto it's head...

Nightbird's color scheme and bot mode are giving me animated Swindle vibes.

I'd be fine with the glasses, its the lack of ears that are killing me. His light-up ears were the coolest character design in g1 outside of Soundwave's voice. I was so happy to get them in the Bee movie so it really sucks that they're gone now.
