I think it's an age thing. Gimmicks appeal to younger audiences, articulation appeals to older ones, and the older kid market for toys has been steadily drying up for the last 30 years, being replaced with the adult market.

Hasbro still puts out toys that focus more on gimmicks over articulation. They just do it in the lines they specifically market to kids and that (seemingly) most of the fandom derides or at least has little to no interest in.
