I'm old school. My first exposure to anime was Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and YGO. I'm dub all the way. I love Armada and Cybertron's a guilty pleasure, but I have never felt compelled to watch subs of the original Japanese versions.
"Where's Ultra Magnus?"
"Um... not here."
"Well... frak. Try not to muck it up, Orion."
"Not like I could muck it up any more then it's already been..."
"What was that?"
"Nothing! Light our darkest hour and such."
I mean...
to me them being on the more realistic end of things adds to the show. I like the way they interact with each other and the Autobots. What can I say? They have a certain charm to their dynamic that I dig.
Kicker had a fairly standard anime "angsty teen discovers great destiny" arc. Jack Darby from Prime had the "unassuming normal teenager finds out he's special" arc, right down to him being compared with Optimus Prime personally. Raf meanwhile was a hyper-intelligent genius.
Sari was literally an...
Ok. Teacher hat time.
Armada's not an expertly written show but as someone who teaches kids around the age of the Armada crew... they got a lot right?
Like often TF human kid sidekicks are Epic Protagonists of Destiny or super smart geniuses (Prime had both) but Armada's kids felt like...
I mean you're telling me stuff I already know. I watched both shows when they were airing 😛
To me Animated just didn't jive for me. I can appreciate its quality, just wasn't for me though.
And Prime? I wanted to like Prime but they tried. So. Damn. Hard. To make everything epic that it becomes...
To me the interesting thing about Nacelle is that he's got Thrust's body/wings but has the standard Seeker head instead of the Conehead. That contrast is key Nacelle's charm on my end. That's why the recent version of him that was announced left me kind of lukewarm. It's an excellent deco but...
I appreciate it but I've always been a dub over sub guy ;)
I can't rewatch Prime. It's so self-serious and dreary. And Animated rubbed me the wrong way when it was out and nothing's really done much to change my mind on it.
The problem is that Ramjet was sort of the default "main" Conehead back in the day so they used his mould to test these decos on. So years later when Hasbro dredges these prototypes up they go "oh so it's a Ramjet repaint" and just run with it.
I love the original Armada line. No it's not perfect, and a lot of the updates of those characters in various Generations lines have done those designs justice, but I still love the originals with their gimmicks and everything.
And as for the tv show... hot take here. Armada is my favourite...
Armada Megs was a great toy and the knife was perfect. The final scene between him and OP in the show more than justified it as-is.
Honestly? I would have taken Armada Megs But With Knees. Which is sort of what we got? I'm happy for it, but I miss all the fun stuff we lost.
So I picked up Armada Megatron today. It's a great figure overall. Shoulders should probably be locked into place in robot mode, but it's honestly not too bad.
What I find myself loving/being frustrated by is that he's such a faithful sculpt of the original, and I LOVED that original toy. So...
