Yes. Star Trek and Star Wars have official rules for how canonicity works for their own purposes but Hasbro just doesn't care because despite their pretences they're not a media company. They're a toy company
That more or less allowed a fan run wiki to become the arbiters of what was and wasn't...
Yep. The people in charge of the Wiki could have gone "yeah no" because there were people in that group who saw what Jim was doing. Their rules and regs weren't dictated by Hasbro, they could have said no.
But they were too wrapped up in their own nonsense to do that.
That's the thing...
He is, and I love it. Tapedeck Soundwave will always have a special place in my heart but I love the idea of stealth bomber Soundwave with the cassettes as bombs. Cybertron Soundwave was so cool conceptually but flawed, and I thought it was great that ES Soundwave pulled from him.
I'd love...
I hope so. Spin-Out was based off of the deco that was the first ever Diaclone Car Robots toy. He's the origin point for so much of this... he needs some rep here.
Willis isn't one of the folks I know, but "slips text into something official that's unrelated" to deal with Jim is a real "fight fire with fire" situation 😛
I'd put good money on some other folks at FP knowing Willis was doing it though, and probably encouraging it.
Which is part of the problem with Jim Sorenson IMO. He knew that. He knew Hasbro wouldn't care too much. So he put it in because he knew could game the system.
In theory, no. Nothing he does is super complicated.
In practice the legs, which formed the bomber's sides, never pegged in right. The bomber canopy never pegged into the legs/sides right. And his gun and shoulder cannon, which formed bombs that could slot into the wings, never actually stayed...
To me a lot of it was just... kind of pointless?
Take Hyperdrive. A late G1 figure that never got passed the concept art stage and only ever really got some art in G1 Skyquake's scope accessory.
There's a lot of interesting stuff we could learn about Hyperdrive. What was his planned deco? Was...
Funnily enough naming the FFoD Primes isn't the worst use of Jim's "canonization" efforts IMO. They're important characters, or should be at least, and probably should have been named back in the 80s.
And while I'm sympathetic to some of the FP peeps who may be annoyed at how they got those...
Jim worked with FP and would have known when Hasbro gave them the ok to name the FFoD guys. If he was working on The Allspark Almanac II when that permission was given he could have easily worked it in to beat FP to the punch.
I wanna be clear that I don't know that for sure, but I do know a...
There's some backstory there.
FunPub asked Hasbro if they could name the FFoD guys. Hasbro said yes. Then Jim Sorenson swept in and named them all in The AllSpark Almanac II, which Hasbro apparently rubber stamped without giving it a thorough read through.
FunPub protested and Hasbro just...
The BM Deployers are really fun little animal dudes. BM as a whole was a weird line, and not one I'm that into I'm afraid for say, but the Deployers are probably one of the more fun aspects of it.
"I am Prima! First born of Primus, wielder of the Star Sabre and Matrix of Leadership! I also need a ride!"
Most of the Thirteen didn't have specified alt modes, and their Aligned/Covenant art didn't give much in the way of kibble to infer. But it is a Transformers toyline so it's gotta be...
I think it's a combination of a few things.
First, a lot of those guys are clearly cobbled together designs from some Sunbow artist at 4:50 on a Friday. Zeta Prime is just a miscoloured Optimus. Guardian Prime is just Eastern European KO Rodimus. Prima is just "change up the answers so it's not...
I don't hate Alpha Trion as a lion, and like with the Thirteen as a whole TFO really sold me on the idea...
...but it is kinda weird that one unproduced BotCon exclusive has just become the default reference point for Alpha Trion.
I liked his TR toy well enough, and I like the Legacy...
On the other hand...
Nova Prime- truck
Sentinel Prime- truck (sometimes)
Optimus Prime- truck
Rodimus Prime- (kind of a) truck
There are outliers (sometimes Sentinel is a a jet and/or train, Nominus is a jet) but there does seem to be a very consistent "Primes are tucks" theme going, so...
There was a rumour floating about that AotP's later waves would have a Sentinel Prime. I've seen people speculating that he could be another stab at the IDW design by repainting/remoulding Siege Astrotrain, or maybe a Missing Link-inspired repaint of Legacy G1 Optimus, but call me crazy but...
He was already both in Titans Return.
The smart money's on AotP Alpha Trion being a Thundertron remould.
I admit I didn't. The whole thing only came about because Simon Furman REALLY wanted Armada Unicron to be G1 Unicron for some reason, and everything had to work around that.
But in...
