UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Ratcheting up the fash rhetoric daily, that’s the British prime minister.

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

That’s another issue with Brexit. The UK government is intent on trade deals with smaller countries on the other side of the world at the cost of destroying previous arrangements with a single economy of 450+ million people a short boat ride away. I mean, I support the idea of trading with NZ...

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Depressingly, it looks like the government are using the murder as a excuse to bring in draconian laws controlling social media. If this was 5 or more years ago I would be assuming that they’d soon quietly shelve the idea as unworkable, but now, after Brexit, I can easily see them going full China.

The games you can't play anymore.

Oh, games I can’t play any more? Anything on the ZX Spectrum. I grew up playing games on that computer (the most popular game system in Britain during the 1980s – the NES was completely unknown here in the UK). The system’s lack of hardware sprites and scrolling is just too apparent.

The British version of Steve Bannon admitted that the UK government never intended to honour the exit treaties with the EU (exact quote: “cheating foreigners is part of the job”).

    Outdated game mechanics.

Boss encounters are something I honestly believe are one of the worst gaming conventions. So many games I really wish didn’t have bosses, because they instantly make the game devoid of fun, e.g. Shovel Knight.

The games you can't play anymore.

It’s not just the controller, it’s the low frame-rate and (very) low resolution graphics that ruins that for me these days. Was genuinely astonishing in 1997, but a blurry, jittery mesh now, sadly. Another game I don’t like any more? Secret of Mana. Was my first JRPG type game (of sorts), as...

    Metroid

I’ve had my copy since last week, but I’ve lost motivation to start playing it, to be honest. So many Metroidvania games in the past half-decade or so have worn out the appeal of the genre to me a bit. Give me another couple of weeks…

    Police behaving badly

No. Not really. The police came down like a tonne of bricks on women holding a peaceful vigil for Sarah Everard, the victim, back in March: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/mar/13/as-the-sun-set-they-came-in-solidarity-and-to-pay-tribute-to-sarah-everard Also, last week, to test...

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Not a bad blog piece… Notes how the UK government have switched within the last week from denying there are shortages to now saying shortages are a sign of how Brexit is ‘working’ as it was always meant to. (The Tories have also fully adopted the Labour Party’s scapegoating of EU citizens as...

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Tory MPs are on the TV claiming that all of Europe has the same goods and fuels shortages as the UK, but “much worse”, and the supposed journalists never challenge or question the politicians. Pure propaganda.

"The Foundation" new Sci Fi TV series on AppleTV+

Only just twigged while watching the third episode that Transformers was influenced by the concept of Trantor, the planet-wide cityscape, and before Star Wars did it (well, on-screen anyway).

Unfortunately, there’s no-one with any power on our side. Labour is just as pro-Brexit as the Tories now, and basically have become nationalistic conservatives, they blamed the fuel crisis on having been in the EU (plus the unions that fund Labour don’t want freedom of movement and workers from...

Sorry about that. Really feel bad (even as a 100% Remain voter) about how the island of Ireland is being affected by all of this, while Ireland didn’t want or vote for it.

Every shop I passed this morning had similar signs outside (notice that they skirted around mentioning the B-word): Translation: “Some of our products are unavailable from our manufacturer” – we can’t get the products because we’re now outside the European Economic Area and customs union, and...
