UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

My MP’s become the first Tory MP to openly admit that Brexit was a bad idea in practice and to float the idea of a partial reversal (rejoining the EEA).

What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

"Racial confusion” sounds awfully like a euphemism for what the Fash call “race mixing”.

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Many Tories, including senior minister Michael Gove, have been vocal for years that they consider the Good Friday Agreement to be a ‘surrender’ to Ireland. Plus problems emerging in northern Ireland would be a distraction to the public from other matters, and something else they can blame on the EU.

Not literally enforced, but that feeling that is almost is. Which honestly I don’t remember being the case back in 2002 or 2012. Way more visible. And way more sinister feeling, given the post 2016 world.

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

you jest, but prominent Brexiteers did talk about “taking Ireland back from Brussels” and forcing Ireland into leave the EU. They’re pretty much quiet on that now, but the underlying line of thought about Ireland by Brexit supporters is that Ireland is a jumped up little colony that should know...

Anyone living in Canada, Australia, NZ or elsewhere still with the British monarch as head of state – are they recognising the queen’s platinum jubilee over there? It’s plastered everywhere here, can’t avoid it. All the media, shops, libraries, etc. Enforced national celebration. Makes me feel...

    Ranting about quebec: newspark edition!

Isn’t a Quebec Conservative Party more than a bit redundant given there’s already several right-leaning parties in Quebec? (I’ve always assumed that the Quebec Liberals were like a provincial PC elsewhere, CAQ is more of a Reform/Alliance for francophones, and PQ has a nasty redbrown streak.)

The government’s announced a move to imperial measurements from metric. No one under the age of sixty was taught solely imperial in school, and I certainly don’t have a clue about them. That’s Brexit, shitting over the younger generations to appease old reactionaries.

Basically becoming a dictatorship at this point. So much open corruption.

Britain’s establishment still trying to break up the EU, perhaps not coincidentally in a way that would benefit Russia.

What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

Have to say, as someone who recognises he lives in a very fucked-up country which has become borderline unrecognisable over the last six years, I’m absolutely dismayed at the regularity of mass shootings in the States. This isn’t right or natural or inevitable. This shouldn’t be allowed to...

    Australian political shenanigans

The Labor Party has beaten the Liberal/National coalition. Just a matter of time to see if Labor has a majority or it’s a hung parliament.

There was a report two weeks ago that up to 7 million people in the UK can’t afford to eat regularly…

Well, the DUP* are having a tantrum over the Brexit ‘deal’ they supported, and the fact that Sinn Fein came first in terms of seats. So they’re sabotaging the NI assembly (admittedly they prefer NI to be directly governed from London). * the ultra-conservative Unionist party.

Not really, no, in terms of the main opposition party and the regular media.

Actually the reverse – he’s complaining about the paperwork that Brexit now requires for importing/exporting from Britain to the EU and northern Ireland. Paperwork that would not need exist his party hadn’t taken the UK out of the EU.

This Tory MP waves round the stack of additional paperwork now required to trade with the EU/EEA. Who’s responsible for this, again?

I’d better stock up on food and medication, then.

Ignoring the results of the NI election, and starting a trade war with the EU during the Ukrainian conflict with Russia? Perfectly normal country.
