We live in a capitalist dystopia

Oh, and Aldi also exists in the US. (And yes, I checked; it's the same Aldi they have in the UK, and not the one they have in most of mainland Europe, although that also has a presence here under the Trader Joe's brand.) Definitely the cheapest way to buy a lot of things around here. I assumed...

    Police behaving badly

"But we know from the senseless killings of Tyre Nichols, Sandra Bland, Philando Castile, and many others that no amount of training or resources will stop police from killing Black and brown people. Nor will it ensure that police treat people with dignity and respect." OK, I guess we just give...

    Cover Songs

Funny thing, Barry McGuire's solo there was possibly also ripped off by Jean-Jacques Perrey (also responsible for the song from the "Going to the Store" viral video and being half of the duo who composed the theme from the Disney Electrical Parade) for "Brazilian Flower": But since we're on...

UK politics thread – meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Just once I'd like to see a country put "nobody" on the ballot as an option and see just how big of a landslide it wins by.

We live in a capitalist dystopia

No, it occurred to them. That's why they programmed the machines to error out and make you call the cashier over if it encounters a single item that won't scan on the first try. Because they had no idea how often that happens (because wasting the one second it takes to rescan a single item was...

We live in a capitalist dystopia

I'm not surprised. Speaking from personal experience, the machines are so unreliable that most of the time you have to press the Call Cashier button and have them sort it out anyway. All they've succeeded in doing is making the few cashiers they have left work twice as hard.

What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

I do sympathize with the idea that internet access shouldn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition—like I actually think it could turn out to be beneficial for kids to be exposed to explicit sex-ed materials long before puberty but I still wouldn't want seven year olds stumbling onto...

What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

He's literally responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands already, thanks to his mishandling of COVID. Let's not forget that. And that was just due to the laziness that, prior to that point, had been his best quality because it was stopping him from following through with the much worse...

What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

If there's any silver lining to Trump being projected to win, it's that we probably won't have Biden voters refuse to show up because they assume they've got it in the bag. I still think that was enough to tip the scale back in 2016.

The Twit destroying Twitter is a Twaitor

The real question is, do any of the sane countries actually allow the kind of invasive data collection and exploitation that TikTok relies on for its revenue in the first place?

We live in a capitalist dystopia

I mean, failing to assume everyone is awful seems to be a good way to get taken advantage of. Some would argue that our current problems are the result of our institutions putting too much trust in everyone to voluntarily do the right thing.

The Twit destroying Twitter is a Twaitor

Depends, are we going on the tradition definition of "capitalist" that includes countries with robust infrastructure, sane regulations, and financial safety nets as long as the majority of what gets done is handled by private industries, or the modern definition that singles out countries that...

What stupid thing did the GOP say or do this time? Episode 3!

I could legitimately see a scenario where Trump wins the presidency but he can't actually do jive because the Democrats managed to retake the House at the same time. Well, can't do jive legally anyway; he's already announced his intention to declare himself dictator the second he's sworn in, but...

Depends on who else is interested in outbidding him. Bluesky is too new to afford it either, Google and Meta are both out of the question because they already own competing platforms... Microsoft maybe? They've been big on growth by accretion lately. Hypothetically a bunch of investors could...

The Twit destroying Twitter is a Twaitor

I'm surprised he was able to cobble something together in the first place with the skeleton crew they have left. It's also a testament to his stupidity that he bothered in the first place. He could have just waited for Biden to sign the bill forcing China to sell TikTok to an American company...

    Traitor Watch - The 45 & 47 Thread

No, they're right about it not being the states' job; but by judicial review it's the Supreme Court's own job to determine what is and isn't constitutional. And if it's not constitutional for Trump to run, they have a duty to say so, right here, right now, BEFORE the election is held. "But...

    Traitor Watch - The 45 & 47 Thread

For those wondering, all nine justices agreed to overturn Colorado's decision to remove Trump from the ballot, saying only Congress has that power. The correct answer, of course, was that they should be the ones saying it's unconstitutional for any state to allow him to run in the first place...
